I like to keep things simple in these cases. Yes, a lot of people (including me) would like to have a definitive set of the Conti scores. But, complex situations such as this ought to be looked at one score at a time. And besides, the album presentations for Rocky I and II are very good as they are.

Anyway, what exactly is holding up a premiere score-only release of Rocky V? It is not highly coveted material among the general audience when compared to the original. Is it because of ridiculous merchandising concerns that no one in the real world even cares about?

Was EMI in control of it despite there being no album of this particular score recording? Even still, didn't UMG buy EMI's assets? Or is there currently too much confusion about rights since UMG must sell a portion of those assets under regulatory law?

If I understand this right, Rocky I, II, III, V and VI were all released in some capacity by EMI, Capitol (which is owned by EMI) and Liberty (which is now part of Capitol). Rocky IV was released by Scotti Bros. which isn't owned or part of EMI, and as you know, by Intrada later (the only one of the specialist soundtrack labels to release a Rocky score).

Read Lukas Kendall's detailed post about MGM and EMI in this thread (it's the 15th post down the page) and it gives you an idea why we've not had any of the other Rocky scores released.

It sounds like a complex matter to end the distribution agreement. That would explain why we haven't seen expanded versions of those titles.

The post is from 2010, so things could have changed. I notice that the Rocky II, III, V and VI albums are only available second hand from Amazon now; only the original Rocky album is still in print, it appears. Does that mean something could be happening?

A lot has changed since then with buyouts, but yes, the situation does appear to remain a massive cluster ****. Oh well, it is ultimately good not to get everything, even though the intro cue to Rocky V is a tremendously powerful recording.

That's the first time anyone's said that on any film music forum. :)
