I just bought mine, thank goodness, because it is nearly gone.

Thanks, Intrada, for bringing it to us while you could!

This is a MAF title, it should be back in stock soon. This shouldn't be a limited edition. For once I much prefer the sound of the Varese SACD ! I usually prefer the dry without reverb sound of Intrada. But I think it works wonderfully in DSD sound/surround for this title. The simple 44 kHz stereo release sounds much less immersive to my ears.

MAF titles also go out of print and are linked to licenses just like any other release of a studio's score, though these licenses are typically held for a much lengthier time. The two recent Les Baxter MAF albums were retired, as was Richard Band's score for Shiver.

It seems like The Great Train Robbery is indeed gone. It was available for well over 3 years, so people who wanted it since it was first released should have slapped that 20 bucks down long ago.

I know that MAF titles can go out of print too, after a long time. But the fact that Intrada never warned us on their main page for this title, like they usually do (even for MAF titles), makes me think it's simply temporarily out of stock. I may be wrong.

It is gone... which is weird that there was no warning at all...
If it was just temporarily out of stock it would still let you order it. and since it says "Sold out" it is most certainly gone at least until someone else reissues it for 465497th time.

Checking on my own, I found that GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY is indeed marked "gone" -- as well as SEVEN DAYS IN MAY / MACKINTOSH MAN. I never noticed a going-out-of-print notice for either; maybe these were short-notice decisions.

Or if this reveals a policy change on announcing deletions, maybe I should browse the catalogue for any titles I should have picked up already!

There's a lot of new and old product to manage for such a small company, so perhaps it is merely a rare situation of a title's terms and/or inventory escaping the notice necessary to provide ample warning to customers.

Now I wish I hadn't procrastinated on purchasing it. x.x I wasn't even sure if I was gonna buy it in the first place, mostly because it didn't sound like something I'd like, but now that I've listened to it again I do like it. Oh well, my own fault for taking too long to decide.

WOLFEN by James Horner, has also apparently sold out:

I don't remember that one being mentioned either? (funnily enough, it was released on the same day as THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY)

Wolfen was mentioned as "to be deleted" by Intrada. ;) Back in January 2013, together with Quiller and Galactica Vol. 3.

Congratulations, TripleC*27 -- I'm sincerely pleased for you. I've been an avid collector of film music since the late 1960s (following the composers who became my favorites, as well as individual scores that appeal to me by others); even so, I still know what it was like from time to time to discover -- or belatedly appreciate -- some particular score only after its album appeared to have vanished. Although we don't know each other, I'm glad you were able to spare yourself pining for a gem like THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY having left the station.

This thread made me pull out the Intrada CD this past weekend. (I hadn't listened to it in a few years, since I'm fortunate to own such a large collection.) The movie itself looked great, although it wasn't written as well as I wished it had been -- but in early 1979, I was thrilled when that LP finally appeared. Short as the original album was, I was delighted to have even such a modest share of that brilliant score available to own. (Many collectors today don't consider what it was like to have lived in an era when no film score was guaranteed commercial release as an album ... nor that the record might be lacking your favorite cues.)

But I'm happy for this thread having motivated me to listen to this beautiful work once again. It's just wonderful to be able to return to a neglected work of any art -- cinematic, musical, or otherwise -- and reacquaint yourself with genius. I particularly appreciated that an area of Jerry Goldsmith's genius was his versatility. I love that some of his brilliant but largely underappreciated works were composed in idioms in which he worked only once, yet displayed a mastery: the sinister waltz linked to a latterday Nazi conspiracy in THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL; sports/Japanese pop for MR. BASEBALL; conveying the flaws of the privileged wealthy through a tango in SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION; and along with these, the fabulous range of variations on his sublime Victorian material in THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY. I'll never run out of reasons to try to explain why that man will be remain my most favorite composer past his lifetime, and for the duration of mine.

However -- revisiting the booklet notes for the Intrada TRAIN ROBBERY issue reminded me that Jeff Bond described this score as "monothematic" ... just as he did John Barry's ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE in his notes for the 2003 Capitol Records expansion. I'm not a musician and do not possess a large musical vocabulary -- but either Bond is uninformed, or I sure am.
