Most of the scores that we discuss on this forum are from American films. I was wondering what are some of your favorite scores from non-U.S. films? (both recent and past)

My immediate thoughts of great non-American scores heavily favor Morricone. I could probably come up with much more interesting non-Morricone picks if I thought about it some more.

5 Morricone Scores
Duck, You Sucker
Revolver
The Red Tent
The Professional
The Sicilian Clan

5 Others
The Haunting (Humphrey Searle)
River Queen (Karl Jenkins)
L'Africain (Georges Delerue)
Eye of the Devil (Gary McFarland)
Stalingrad (Angelo Badalamenti)

I was always partial to Seven Samurai (Fumio Hayasaka), Two English Girls (Georges Delerue), Five Man Army (Ennio Morricone), Metello (Morricone) and La Partie D'Echecs (Frederic Devreese) to name just five.

Setting aside some of the obvious Morricone scores and the many scores from well known British films. Here are some I came up with.

Marie de Nazareth - O. Lliboutry
La Nouvelle Guerre Des Boutons - P. Rombi
Valhalla - R. Goodwin
Pan Tedeusz - W. Kilar
The Brothers Karamazov - P. Piccioni
Le Bossu - P. Sarde
Io e Napoleone - P. Buonvino
Au Nom De Tous Les Miens - M. Jarre
The Lighthorsemen - M. Millo
Tristano E Isotta - M. Frisina
The Return of the Three Musketeers - J.C. Petit
Michele Strogoff - M. Frisina
Fuoco Su Di Me - Savio Riccardi

Kruimeltje AKA Little Crumb (Henny Vrienten)
Oorlogswinter AKA Winter in Wartime (Pino Donaggio)

Both Dutch films.

A favorite of mine is Klaus Doldinger's The NeverEnding Story (which despite the presence of some American actors was a German production). I'd rate his score almost as highly as other fantasy scores from that era, such as Krull or The Dark Crystal. I recently acquired the German Blu-ray of the film (which is actually region-free) and the scenes which ran with Giorgio Moroder's music in America are so much more enhanced and epic with Doldinger's score.

Toru Takmitsu's music is also high on my list of favorites. Not only Ran (which is probably his most famous score) but also scores like Rikiyu, and Glowing Autumn.

Since none of the other Swede`s on this board has replied yet so I start with two favorite scores from Sweden:

Noll Tolerans (Zero Tolerance) by Bengt Nilsson. The soundtrack CD includes 15 minutes of score and the rest is filled with songs. Who happens to be the brother of the writer-director of that movie.

and

Den Vita Lejoninnan (The White Lioness) by Thomas Lindahl. (I have two Lindahl compilations/collections but neither of them includes any music from that movie).
