I was thinking the other day about great compilation albums that play extremely well from beginning to end and contain cues from multiple works by a single composer, mostly those with recordings specifically for that particular album. What are some of your favorites?

Some favorites of mine on CD that I often go to:

The Great Hitchcock Movie Thrillers (Bernard Herrmann)
North of Hollywood (Alex North)
Movie and TV Themes (Elmer Bernstein) (available on the Intrada Ava set)
Ready When You Are, J.B. (John Barry) (probably not a favorite among most, but I find these recordings charming)
Great Movie Themes (Miklós Rózsa) (bring on the Polydor albums!)

Some of the Morricone compilations play well, Morricone 2000 and Morricone 2001, Film Music 1 and 2, the compilations on General Music France label. Trying to rack my brain recalling some more, you've mentioned a couple of my favorites.

I don't own very many compilation albums but of the few I own I would have to say my favorite is the "Movie and TV Themes" cd by Elmer Bernstein.

I also enjoy the listening to the John Scott cd "John Scott conducts his Favorite Scores"

Always liked Jarre by Jarre -- good selection of themes, impeccably performed, with beautiful sound (how I miss CTS!). I much prefer it to Jarre's Abbey Road or Royal Festival Hall CDs.

I'll put in my vote for "David Shire at the Movies", which contains wonderful solo and chamber arrangements from a well-selected variety of Shire's film music. The Kritzerland edition also includes his effervescent "Sonata for Cocktail Piano" as a terrific bonus. Easily one of my favorite albums of its type - I love the intimate quality of the performances, which really reinforces the strength and brilliance of these compositions.

Voyages (Alan Silvestri) : it opens with the fantastic Silver Pictures logo, and then the first piano notes of Forrest Gump take you in a fantastic musical journey that only stops with the relentless percussions and brasses of Predator 2.
