INTRADA Announces:

DIE SISTER, DIE!
Composed by Hugo Friedhofer
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 282

In 1976, composer Hugo Friedhofer took on the scoring assignment for The Companion, what would be his last big screen assignment. It was a horrifying tale of family greed, jealousy and murder that ultimately became known as Die Sister, Die! The film gave Friedhofer ample room to display his seldom-heard gift for writing with a brittle, challenging harmonic vernacular. Using an orchestra of strings, woodwinds, a modest contingent of brass, xylophone, vibraphone, glockenspiel, bell tree, harp, piano and a small percussion section, Friedhofer delivered the requisite shudders and thrills. Even amidst all of the contemporary ideas for strings and the significant number of transparent woodwind solos, Friedhofer’s signature Americana harmonies found their way into the score. The resulting score is a rich meld of classic Friedhofer with an all-new voice.

To present this world premiere stereo release of Hugo Friedhofer’s masterful score for Die Sister, Die!, Intrada was fortunate to have access to the original scoring session mixes made by ace scoring mixer John Richards at The Music Centre on 1/2″ three-channel stereo tape. These had been preserved in flawless condition by Michael Lonzo, the director of cinematography for the picture in 1976. The genuine stereo image is crisp and clear with considerable detail

The plot centers on Edward Price (Jack Ging), who hires Esther Harper (Antoinette Bower) to care for his ailing—but also cantankerous and shrewish—sister Amanda (Edith Atwater). His real intent, however, is to convince the nurse to help him murder his malicious sibling so he can claim the family inheritance. Esther gradually uncovers the family’s nasty secrets—including the existence of a second sister, Nell (Peg Shirley).

Sounds good.

Quite an interesting release in numerous ways: Involvement from the cinematographer who happened to have kept the music tapes in tip-top condition, a source cue contribution from Jeri Southern, conducted by Carl Brandt, and of course Friedhofer's final film score.

Will buy ASAP!

Hugo Friedhofer is one of my favorites, and to have a horror score composed by him is going to be fantastic. I consider myself a huge horror fan, but never saw this movie before. Thank you Intrada for once again not only turning me on to another wonderful score, but I look forward to experiencing the movie for the first time as well.

This is an amazing release. (Well, actually, all three are amazing releases...I'm not normally a big fan of Alex North for whatever reason, but these sound clips are shockingly good. Leave it to Lukas Kendall to find the most obscure yet awesome stuff to release!)

I just wanted to add that we all owe our thanks to the beloved "manderley" at the FSM board who I take it provided the tapes for this release (they weren't really lost but sitting in his closet for decades). I found out about it three years ago in this thread, and I'm guessing Intrada noticed it too:

Now the obvious question is...can the rights be worked out for A Walk in the Forest? The fact that Intrada just put out an obscure rejected score by North paired with one he did for Monsanto (!) gives me hope for this obscure (it isn't even listed on IMDb) documentary's music, which is supposed to be incredibly good.

Thanks again Intrada for bringing us more from the wonderful Hugo Friedhofer!

Save a copy for me. Will order as soon as possible. Hugo Friedhofer is the absolute best and the B movie stuff he worked on during the 70's is all good. Like to see a release of Paul Bartel's Private Parts. (Not sure I like the way that sounds but you know what I mean).

For the life of me I just can't appreciate/like Friedhofer's music. Aside from "BYOOL" and "One eyed Jacks" nothing else in his voluminous catalog tickles my fancy.

Best Years Of Our Lives, his most famous score...

Personally I'm surprised such a big fan of Goldsmith and Newman doesn't like Friedhofer more. I thought the many qualities in common would swing thing. RM, have you heard Rains of Ranchipur? It seems like it would have all the things you like...

Looks like I picked the right time to get into Friedhofer. I got started earlier this year with the kritzer re-issue of One-Eyed Jacks, but a low-key horror sound is more my kind of thing, and this album is wall-to-wall great as far as I'm concerned. A new favorite in fact.

Friedhofer's easily on my top 10 film composers, and I'm really glad you're getting into him. May I recommend next a personal favorite (and amazing deal from Kritzerland), The Rains of Ranchipur? For $19.95 you get a two disc set with that masterpiece and two other excellent scores as a bonus! Rains of Ranchipur has some low key tense scoring you may like, and also some gorgeous themes I hope you'll also like.
