New Delerue release from Music Box Records!

AMERICAN FRIENDS (1991)
MUSIC COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY GEORGES DELERUE

Limited Collector's Edition of 1000 copies.
World Premiere Release. 39 minutes of music never released before.
8-page CD booklet with liner notes by Gergely Hubai.

Ref: MBR-037
RELEASE DATE: December 2, 2013

Music Box Records proudly presents the world premiere CD release of acclaimed composer Georges Delerue's score for American Friends (1991).

Directed by Tristram Powell, American Friends is a period romance written by and starring Michael Palin. Based on the journals of his great grandfather, Palin's screenplay tells the story of Reverend Francis Ashby, a reclusive Oxford scholar who takes a trip to Switzerland. While hiking in the Alps, Ashby meers Caroline and Elinor Hartley, a wealthy socialite and her adopted daughter who both take an interest in the strange foreigner. When the trip is over, the Hartleys follow Francis back to Oxford where the strict moral codes and restrictions are bound to cause havoc, especially now that Ashby is about to run for an important position at his college...

Transferred from the DAT containing all the recording sessions, the music by Georges Delerue is relatively brief (it's about 40 minutes long), but it contains all the charm and wonder we come to expect from the composer, especially from the later period of his career. Featuring some of his favorite London musicians, Delerue's score benefits from the lush strings section in creating the perfect accompaniment for the picturesque hikings in the Alps - the music is so warm that it's capable of melting the hearts of the most serious gentlemen at Oxford!

The liner notes by Gergely Hubai discuss the film and the score based on original interviews with star/screenwriter Michael Palin, director Tristram Powell and Colette Delerue.

Her Alibi and a pristine Something Wicked is all that I think I need from Delerue's oeuvre at this point.

Sword of Gideon would be good too, but it's a Canadian recording and we know how that usually turns out with regard to AFM fees.

I would actually like to see any of Delerue's numerous American television scores released like Amos or Queenie. Hopefully they still exist.

New release from Music Box Records!

LE MYTHOMANE (1980) • L'ÉDUCATION SENTIMENTALE (1973)
COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY GEORGES DELERUE

Limited Collector's Edition of 750 copies.
60 minutes of music never released before.
8-page CD booklet with French and English liner notes by Gilles Loison.

Ref: MBR-042
RELEASE DATE: February 5, 2014

After the previous CD release of Les Visiteurs and L’Homme qui revient de loin, Music Box Records is pleased to present for the first time two unreleased scores composed by Georges Delerue for the significant works of French TV directors Michel Wyn and Marcel Cravenne: Le Mythomane (1981) and L’Éducation sentimentale (1973)

Written by Alphonse Boudard, Le Mythomane had its origins in an episode of the 1979 series Histoires de voyous directed by Michel Wyn. The TV series tells the story of the daily lives of common petty thieves. This nice little gang consisted of Aunt Victoire, a “baroness” of the underhanded (Suzy Delair), Fernand, a gutsy rascal from the slums (Jacques Balutin) and Norbert Beaufumé (Francis Perrin), a petulant con artist whose pathological lying has driven him to maintaining two separate families.
Delerue writes a main theme based on an accordion waltz which reminds us of the appealing and amiable nature of this comedy “à la française”. He comes up with a version of this for clarinet, associated with the baroness. He also selects a number of soloist timbres to accompany certain of the characters such as the vibraphone for the star Linda Marlène (Bernadette Lafont), the piano for Frédo (André Pousse), a night-club manager, the bassoon for Bébert (Jo Dalat), a vagrant man swindled by Norbert. The suspense scenes are accompanied by a jazz ambiance dominated by double-bass, clarinet and muted trumpet. The tone is light and playful.

Adapted from a novel by Gustave Flaubert, L’Éducation sentimentale describes the life of Frédéric Moreau, (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a young man living through the revolution of 1848 and the founding of the Second French Empire, and his love for Marie Arnoux, an older woman (Françoise Fabian).
Delerue chose to express Frédéric’s passions through a melancholy musical theme, a slow waltz led on by the delicate harp of Lily Laskine. It emphasizes romance and sadness. The rest of the score relies heavily on recreation of the music of the era, accompanying ballroom and masquerade soirée scenes. A lineup of strings, brass and percussion enlivens sequences depicting revolt and insurrection.

Georges Delerue's gift for melody and enormous versatility are once again demonstrated with these stunningly beautiful scores for jazz combo and orchestra featuring his beloved strings, solo flute, piano and harp.

Music Box Records explores once more the television scope of Georges Delerue's music and presents complete scores from master tapes courtesy of Delerue's archives. Conceived and written like music for cinema, these two marvellous scores show again the talented skills of the French composer for the TV screen.

That's a surprise. Paramount's well of Delerue scores now seems to have been completely tapped when it comes to premieres, or am I missing something?

Quartet Records is proud to present its four new releases …

PARTNERS
Music Composed and Conducted by Georges Delerue
Limited Editon of 1000 units

Quartet Records and Paramount Pictures are proud to present the world premiere release of the (almost) unused score by Georges Delerue (Jules et Jim, Man, Woman and Child, Platoon) for the buddy comedy directed by James Burrows from a screenplay by Francis Veber. Ryan O’Neal and John Hurt play an “odd couple” of policemen that are ordered to investigate a series of murders being committed in the gay community.

The score was one of the first written by Delerue after he settled in Hollywood, and is also one of the weirdest and, until now, least-known works from his long career. The film, which suffered several cuts in the editing room, was finally released with a total of approximately 12 minutes of original Delerue music and a large number of pop songs and cues from other films produced by Paramount during the same period—by Giorgio Moroder, Dave Frank and Charles Fox, among others. But, having access to all the Delerue recordings (preserved in mint condition in the Paramount vaults), we have discovered that Delerue recorded not just one, but two different scores for the film. Only a few cues were used in the final edit, and many were used in places other than that for which the composer had been originally written them.

For the album, we have rebuilt the score in the best possible way—as Delerue conceived it. We have followed the order of the film and included music for some sequences that were deleted in the editing room.

Romantic, funny, charming, with lots of suspense music, haunting melodies, an unforgettable waltz ... a “new” Delerue has finally come out of the closet 32 years after it was recorded! The package includes a 12-page full-color booklet with liner notes by Tim Greiving.
