Considering that the late composer was not noted for his "dramatic" film scores, it's always satisfying to find an exception. Though still largely rooted in a pop sensibility, it's surprising just how effective and dramatic is the music for DUEL AT DIABLO. Like the movie itself, there is so much of the score that is so emotionally charged, even beyond the extraordinary opening credits. In all likelihood the only surviving musical elements are for the United Artists LP, and these should be re-issued as the only previous legitimate release was on the hugely expensive FSM MGM Soundtrack Treasury box set. Albeit the running time is on the short side, maybe this could be coupled with another surprising western score from MGM which has never been released, Riz Ortolani's THE HUNTING PARTY.
