In the 1991 film Paradise, Willard Young (Elijah Wood) spends the summer with Ben and Lily Reed (Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith), a bitter fisherman and his numb (but kind) wife who recently lost their infant son—causing thick tension in their farmhouse. Willard finds a friend in neighbor Billie (Thora Birch) and, spurred by her friendship and the love he develops for the Reeds, begins to challenge his own fears—and provides warmth enough to thaw the ice between Ben and Lily. Composer David Newman provided rich Americana writing with an emphasis on transparent ideas and dramatic melodies for the film. As Variety writer Lawrence Cohn wrote, “David Newman’s warm musical score is a key contribution.” Newman responded to the story with a poignant theme for Willard, introduced first on piano over oscillating strings, then blossoming on celli. The melody’s orchestration adapts to its purposes in the story, from young Willard’s wide-eyed bus trip to Lily and Willard’s budding friendship. The score is a rich, emotional experience, ranking as one of Newman's finest works.

Robert Folk's score to Can’t Buy Me Love plays in contrast with an emphasis on breezy melodic lines with hints of subtle dramatic content. In the film, Ronald Miller (Patrick Dempsey) is a victim of the high school popularity game. Though he’s intelligent, funny, and a hard worker, he’s nothing but dorky “Donald” to his dream girl, cheerleader Cindy Mancini (Amanda Peterson). Ronald has been mowing lawns all summer to save money for a telescope, but when he sees a distraught Cindy trying to replace her mom’s expensive suede suit at the mall, he offers to “rent” her for a month, and in return for his thousand dollars she’ll play the part of his doting girlfriend. In her desperation she agrees, and Ronald’s theory proves true—even to the point of winning Cindy’s feelings—until his new status goes to his head and his shallow shortcut hits a shattering dead end.

Using strings for emotion, Folk assigned a lot of the score to radio-friendly instruments like guitar, bass, synth, harmonica, and a rhythm section. The main theme bounces and rocks initially as Ronald enjoys his new-found popularity, waxes romantic as Cindy begins to fall for him, and bemoans his state as he loses Cindy and his status. His banishment to social “Siberia” is accompanied by a hangdog harmonica tune with rock accompaniment and percussion.

Would have preferred a Paradise / Captain Ron combo. But still, this is bought.

I'm really glad that my second-guessing proved wrong as I've always had a soft spot for Can't Buy Me Love. I was unaware of the Newman score and love what I hear in the samples. This is a splendid pairing loaded with beautiful melodies.

David Newman is automatic, but "Can't Buy Me Love" is a damn' fine bonus for me! The film shot in Tucson across town while I was in high school, so MASSIVE amounts of general awesomeness go with this one for me. I knew the girl at the dance who says, "What a spazz!" when Donald dances like African locusts mating, or whatever it is.

I'm afraid on this occasion I must admit to being one of Bruce Kimmel's mindless drones who automatically buys anything from the '80s out of a misguided sense of nostalgia. But I am jiggy with that.

I was fortunate enough to attend the scoring session for Paradise. Was quite a thrill to meet David Newman and Tim Boyle, and moreover to hear such a terrific score live. Thus I was very disappointed when no soundtrack release appeared.

What a terrific release. I never thought we would see Folk's score see the light of day. What a fantastic surprise this was, and a fabulous Newman score to go with it! Thank you so much, Intrada, the studios and composers. As they say around these parts: ordered!

I've been listening to this one a bunch lately, and I simply forgot just how beautiful a score 'Cant't Buy Me Love' really is. Folk created some very moving music for that film, as well as Newman for 'Paradise.' Again - terrific album and one everyone should consider adding to their collections. Thank you, again, Intrada.

I've been watching the movie Paradise lately. I had only seen the french movie it is based on, and I must say it was a very powerful movie, very well played (Elijah Wood on top of his childhood stardom) and the score was absolutely breathtaking, certainly the most moving score David Newman ever composed.

After listening to the samples for Paradise, I think I would be a fool to pass up this very moving score.

After listening to both scores, I can safely say that I made the right choice in purchasing this soundtrack! Intrada, you guys have done a fantastic job on this release. I love Newman's score, and Folk's was quite a surprise for me. Thank you to everyone involved in the making of this wonderful release with these two hidden gems!

A wonderful album indeed, the most sensitive David Newman's score ever, and a rare 80's symphonic-pop score from usually largely symphonic composer Robert Folk. It is surely something not to miss out !

I just watched an obscure mid 1980s Disney Sunday Movie called "Ask Max". The score was by Robert Folk and interestingly he used almost the exact same theme from Can't Buy Me Love. It was slightly altered, but similar in melody and orchestration. I believe the TV show aired in 1986, making the Can't Buy Me Love theme a further developed idea. The film Ask Max is only an hour long so probably doesn't have much score to release, but perhaps it could be paired with other Robert Folk things on a future album.
