"The existing CD of Rio Conchos is a re-recording conducted by the composer for Intrada Records in 1988. FSM's new release features the original soundtrack--never before released--as recorded for the film at 20th Century Fox in 1964. The recording is complete, in chronological order, and in excellent mono sound with eleven cues not included on the Intrada CD, including a great deal of moody, flamenco-based material for Tony Franciosa's character and a lengthy, bravura action cue ("Drag Race") written almost exclusively for percussion. Bonus tracks include a seldom-heard vocal version of the title theme and five tracks of score remixed in stereo, focusing on the action-packed climax. "[/quote]

I was playing this over the weekend as well - tend to go back and forth from FSM to Intrada. Maybe Doug can enlighten us as to why that fantastic all percussion Drag Race cue wasn't recorded. That is a real standout cue in the film. Great nihilistic stuff.

Regardless, I'm a bit of a stickler for the originals when I can have 'em... but to try and get a happy medium, when I buy Rio Conchos I'll get FSM's release through this site.

I have only the FSM release of this score and I love it from the opening percussions/harmonica theme track to the very end of the disc. I can't say I would be too impressed by the sound quality though, and upon listening to it recently, I started thinking about the Intrada CD might perhaps have a better sound quality.

Me thinks me'll have to check it out !

It's a slightly different topic, but I *finally* got the old Intrada CD of Hour of the Gun very recently, and what I understand is that it is also a re-recording (from 1960's though). But the word 'Universal' doesn't make me feel there'll be a complete version to compare anytime soon. It's an excellent disc -- I wonder how much faithful it is to the film version (which I have never heard) ?

Yeah, Planet Of The Apes is one hell of a good score, it's both a terrific film score that tremendously supports the dramatic narrative and a powerful listening experience on its own; even Goldsmith himself has never bettered that one. He might have matched it now and then, though.
