It may not be quite the way you intended it, but, like Squiggy, I would not mind, and would be happy that fellow members (here and there) could get a second chance-- as I would have liked to have one.
Whatever the number, I order as very soon as possible when I am interested. I am still on the fence for the Bernstein Box, and I missed The Enemy Below out of procrastinating, but otherwise, I have understood how it works and do my best not to miss any announcement I might be interested in, nor any release I am interested in.
Of course, I won't buy other things right now, but, really, between a book or a CD that will still be available in a couple of months and something that might sell out within a few days, there's no hesitation as to the priority.
Now, I understand this would be exceptional, but, for later releases, how could it work out?
Let's suppose the studios agreed to let you release 2000 units, or even 3000. Would it be a good idea to include a clause allowing you to do it by batches depending on the sales? For instance, a first run of 1500, then 500 more if necessary, then 500, ..., till you reach the limit allowed.
This might give people a second chance, and, naturally, you would have to explain it.
That's where I am afraid it could fast become terrible two-edged for you.
Come the next release, many people could consider "there'll be another run", "then another", and procrastinate, buying instead one-run limited releases released about the same time or even earlier.
In the end, you might end up not even selling out the first run; these units would be the only ones printed, so you would not have, say, 1700 in the warehouse, but still mabye 750 or 1000.
To help people not miss out on a release, you might set up some sort of "simple" customized subscription system: "I want, and hereby agree, to buy any limited Goldsmith score you might release"-- so that people could at least be sure not to miss a limited release of a score by their favorite composer.
I am aware this would surely not be that easy for you to set up, and would not solve the problem of hoarding speculators, unless the subscription were limited to one copy per customer.
But then, what if you got more subscriptions that the amount of CDs you are allowed to release? 2000 "I want any new Broughton score" aubscriptions but only the right to make a 1500 run?
The re-use fees would surely still be a barrier, preventing any agreement for that sort of sure-sale releases.
I am sorry I am actually raising even more issues than solving the problem (if that is even possible).
