And it has one of the coolest and most exhilarating recurring themes during the driving sequences, with a wonderful variation of it for the end credits.

I've seen World War III (on YouTube a while back) and The Sentinel, and while I like those scores too, they do not grab me like The Last Chase does. It is nice to know the preferences of Melle himself even though I do not share them.

Okay, I just finished comparing the film to my ... copy of the score.

Initial results:

Half the score is dropped from the film. Some of the cues on my version are so different, I think scenes may have been cut. Some are clearly for the same scene as in the film, but it's clear the film was edited down ad nre-shoot in places to the point the music didn't fit anymore.

Melle's weird, experimental orchestra and elextronics cue for when Capt. Williams finds them for the first time and persues, for example, only features about a little over a fourth of it in the film, with an edited part of it tracked later into the film.

There's two source instrumental pieces, can't say they're by Melle.

Somewhere over 30 cues, with possibly one cue edited and tracked into a few scenes.

I'd say the full score, un-used, alternates, film versions, all the rest, probably runs just over 60 minutes.

A good bit of action material is dropped, some soft stuff dropped.


Film is quite good, too.

It's heartening to see the interest in Melle's work, although I tend to feel the same way as James Phillips - I'd prefer to see THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR and FRANKENSTEIN THE TRUE STORY released.

I was a little disappointed by the score -- can't say I'd spend that much on it. Maybe if instead the price was lowered some dollars, and those missing dollars are spread around to future release that will sell out, like the "Battlestar Galactica" volumes, and the (MAF?) "Conan the Barbarian" (and whatever else mega title might be coming), so people will be more encouraged to buy it.


Anyway, to help people decide, I've made two long suites -- not the whole score, but just something to get an idea of it. I've skipped the long action cue I described a few posts ago.

I only got to listen to the first video so far, and love every second of it. I think the neat end credits version of the score's principal theme kicks in at around the 5:20 mark.

Actually, as I recall, the End Credits is the final cue in suite #2 -- which has half the good stuff.

The ending of the film happens to be on YouTube. It has the end credits cue that I remember hearing (starts at 8:05).

I forgot to say -- I double checked and you are right, the End Credits are in the first suite.

I just listened to the second suite. Great stuff.

I usually find Melle's music to make for a highly agreeable listen and this score is no exception. His scores are experiments gone right.

Maybe the Canadian union fees will be reasonable some time in the future and this can be released at a $20 price point. In the mean time, there are plenty of other good Melle scores to work on.

I should add that the other scores were hopefully not recorded in Canada!
