Apparently, anyway. People are tearing their hair out over on the FSM board and swearing up and down that they shall boycott the film and start picketing public buildings and all manner of overwrought stuff. I have no idea what a Newman-scored Bond film might be like, but after hearing the back end of his new "Iron Lady" score I'm VERY interested in finding out. The guy's got serious chops - just because he hasn't scored massive-scaled action scenes before doesn't mean he can't.

Everyone needs to relax about this, I think. The producers aren't gonna let anything untoward bugger up their franchise no matter who's directing. Worst case, David Arnold will get a panicked eleventh hour phone call from the scoring stage and end up not sleeping at all during the last six months of this year. Me, I hope Thomas Newman knocks it out of the park. :D

This is GREAT news. I think the James Bond franchise needs a change from the unimaginative scoring that Arnold provided lately. The Bond series can definitely utilize the softer melodic touch that Newman is known for while breaking out the pure adrenaline when the film calls for it.

The producers of the 007 films occasionally toss in new meat to see what comes up. Bill Conti, Sir George Martin and Marvin Hamlisch were all given a shot and the world didn't come to an end. I think they actually did good jobs on their respective films.

I'm looking forward to just getting to see the next 007 film, so I'll try to keep an open mind about the score. :D

I prefer Newman to Arnold. Should be interesting to hear what he composes.

VERY excited about this, and am baffled by the backlash (not here, FSM of course....)

I love Arnold's scores, but cmon - does anyone get the idea he really doesn't have anything
else to say in this series? He did a great job on his 'set' of Bond's but aside from brief highlights
in the Craig films, he's just kind of going through the motions at this point. Die Another Day is about
where I think he kind of checked out a bit, thanks to the stupid Madonna controversy, but Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough are amazing - after 10 years they both stand up to scrutiny, and have some fantastic themes IMO. But....it's time for new blood....

I don't believe I've seen any mention of RED CORNER by T.Newman, which is what I'm
thinking may be the nearest relative to a TNewman Bond score. Check it out, it's a good one.

I have to add, after re-reading the above posts, maybe some of the lame "haven't heard a note"
backlash is because of the Newman/Zimmer factor. I like both composers, but in a roundabout way
they have "ruined" film music these days. Almost every score being churned out is bound to have pounding Zimmer action chords, or sensitive Newman minor key piano against floating string/synth beds. Not their fault directly, but a case of Zimmer clones and Newman temp tracks has saturated everything we are hearing in cinema now.

Filmmakers are dumb.....

I think it will be cool to see what Newman can come up with...This is a composer I´m not thinking of James Bond too and he may surprise us...I hate people who comes to conclusions even before any notes have been recorded...

Very excited about this as well...

I do like David Arnold's music (for most things), but the infusion of "new blood" is most welcome. I have always been a fan of his and think his collaborations with Sam Mendes is quite good.

Recently I watched THE DEBT that he scored and was, as usual, impressed. Very slick. Stylish. I am wondering if he is going to give Bond that type of treatment???

Awesome news...

When I first heard that Thomas Newman would be scoring James Bond, I was more worried about Thomas Newman than James Bond. :-)

I thought: why? He's "too good" for that. By that I mean there's a personal quirkiness and genuine Americana warmth in Thomas Newman's music that I just don't connect with a decade old British franchise like James Bond. James Bond is simply a movie franchise, a big one.

But it will be VERY interesting to hear a full scale Thomas Newman action score, and for me personally it is by far the most anticipated James Bond score ever.
