A huge thanks to the gang at Intrada and everyone else involved with this release.

Masada is one of the few Goldsmith albums I missed out on. I know it's not the LP recording but I've been holding off on buying it on the secondary market in hopes one day the complete score to the miniseries would be released.

I have the original album on LP. I never bought the Varese CD because I heard that the sound for side one got messed up in the transfer.

When it comes to Goldsmith's re-recordings, I think it is always worth having both configurations because, even in his most faithful score recreations he often made different arrangements, edits and production choices when recording for a film score than when recording for a record. And something that I've learned from his body of work as well as that of many of his contemporaries working in television: a larger orchestra doesn't always mean that the music is more "muscular."

Because I've owned a decent presentation of Goldsmith's contribution for so many years, it is Stevens' music that I am most intrigued about. I only saw parts of the mini-series many years ago, but I remembered some pretty thunderous battle music and a few very chilling sequences toward the end.

I'll add my thanks and congrats to all at Intrada and Universal for making this special release a reality. A wonderful release. Intrada prove again they are the best at this. Thank you for continuing to feed my JG habit with regular and incredible CDs like this.

Thanks so much for this release! My copy arrived today, which has to be some kind of record since I live in Hawaii. The jewel case was cracked but no biggie; just so happy to have this fantastic score in my hands to start off the weekend.

Cheers!
Harry

Thanks Intrada! My copy arrived yesterday and I've already listened to the first disc twice. Moving on to the second disc this evening. And wow, it really is that good. I wasn't familiar with this production even though I was old enough in 1981 to have watched it; although the main theme and 'The Mime' sound very familiar.

I'm basically a newb in the world of film score collecting/discussing and this must be a fantastic introduction to Jerry Goldsmith.

Thanks again!

Just got my CD - listening to it now - this is just a great, great release!
Intrada, you hit a home run on this one - looking forward to the Morton Stevens music later on and that fantastic "Ram's Head"/"Battering Ram" music and finale.

Truly, wonderful stuff here - more later...:-)

I received mine a couple days back and this CD is just fantastic. I really love the "new" performances of all the familiar tracks, and of course the amazing trove of unreleased music, both Goldsmith and Stevens. Getting more familiar with this awesome soundtrack is going to be like discovering the old LP all over again. Thanks, Intrada!

Well, I just finished listening to this set and all I can say is OUTSTANDING!

I have to admit, I really got caught up in Part 4 and the Morton Stevens material - when track 19 was playing, I kind of got "choked up" from the impact of that track - very moving and powerful stuff, as I knew it would be.

I've never heard this music sound so crisp and clear - very well done with the mastering, Doug - this release just blows the MCA LP and Varese CD (which I also have) away!

All in all, I really enjoyed the Goldsmith material, but it was the Morton Stevens' stuff that really "nailed it" and brought the whole listening experience home to a powerful and emotional close - BRILLIANT stuff, indeed!

Now, I am going back to listen to this set again - love it!!!...:-)

Goldsmith at his finest, just a remarkable sublime score by the Master. Can't thank Intrada enough for this sensational release of "Masada" :D

There's a strange line on the back of the Varese CD/MCA LP release:

"Recorded at EMI, Abbey Road Studios, London, England
Edited by Frederico Savena, International Recording, Rome Italy"

Why would an Abbey Road recording with a London orchestra be sent to Rome for "editing," especially since the re-recording was "Produced and Arranged by Jerry Goldsmith" ??

Could be Goldsmith was headed there anyway after the recording and had the "Masada" stuff edited there while he got on with other things. Or someone goofed when putting together the album artwork.

I have listened to this release countless times now and would have to say that this is the best release in a number of years. I have owned the Varese rerecording since it was released on LP and then on CD. We are sitting down tonight to revisit the DVD of MASADA. It will be interesting to hear the music in the film since I have the Intrada released etched into my head!
