The sound samples for Intrada's The Great Escape release. Why? Well ok, I didn't lug any cds up the stairs to my law office today and I was in the mood for some Elmer Bernstein.....

"Cooler, Hilts. Cooler, Ives"

When I got to the car it was John Addison's Tom Jones, because I love the score and it had been a while since I had played it all the way through.

Horner's Bicentennial Man. Why?

Because I'm a hopeless romantic, and I'm spending Valentine's Evening with my Wife. :)

John Barry's Body Heat because I watched the Blu-ray a few days ago and found myself hooked (again) on that score. It's the perfect blend of classy and sultry, and it serves as an excellent reflection of however Ned Racine (William Hurt) is feeling at the time. I was surprised when watching the special features that this film, which I always considered one of the quintessential "hot" films, was actually filmed in rather cold weather. The "hot" is entirely an illusion made by the filmmakers, the actors and the score.

I'm listening to the Joel McNeely recording on Varèse Sarabande because it's damn near impossible to find the original recording at anything resembling a decent price, and I've heard it and the sound mix is rather messy. McNeely's performance is quite good, even if Barry's is the slightly "sleazier" (most apparent with the cues toward the beginning of the film). The Varèse Sarabande sounds excellent, the "concert hall" miking for the orchestral portion works in contrast to the closer sound of the jazz band.

Link: Because it is one of my favorite Goldsmith scores. Beautifully quirky and wonderfully complex.

Prince of Darkness: Because it is the very definition of the sonic "carpeting" that John Carpenter likes his music to be. At first you notice it, but then - if it is doing its job properly - it fades into the movie experience and does not distract from it. I also find it wonderful music to write or read to, for that very reason.

Red Sonja, The Thing, and Once Upon A Time in the West: Because I am on an Ennio Morricone kick right now.

Those who piss and cry "political correctness" would have a stroke after hearing this. Bought this disc a few days ago. A new name to me, Mel Henke. He scored 2500 television commercials during the 1950's and 1960's (See The USA In Your Chevrolet).

Great west coast jazz musicians on this recording as well as The Jud Conlin Singers, originally released on the Warner Brothers label in 1962. Stand out track, All That Meat. A woman sings, "All that meat! Oooh! So much to eat! All that meat and no potatoes". I just about blew a gasket I laughed so hard.

La Dolce Henke, just for the hell of it.

The Lively Ones - Mel Henke

The voice of Herschel Bernardi who also voiced The Jolly Green Giant and Charlie The Tuna.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi0TM5PsVMk

The guy on the cover is west coast radio personality Tom Donahue (...surrounded by four women who heard he was famous). According to his wikipedia page, authored an article for Rolling Stone magazine in 1967 entitled, AM radio is dead and its rotting corpse is stinking up the airwaves.

I like this recording. It's always good to come across something old and entirely new at the same time.

NORTH AND SOUTH Book One

BILL CONTI

Was in the mood for something epic this evening. You do not get much more "epic" than this great score...

Yes, tomorrow will be

NORTH AND SOUTH Book Two

BILL CONTI...

A lot to listen to...

Elmer Bernstein's THE GREAT ESCAPE - Intrada 3CD-Set. Why? Because this package, everything of it, just makes me a happy camper. LOVE it. Thanks Intrada. And Maestro Bernstein. 8)

Here here orbital. I listened to this Thursday while driving, because I was in the mood for something different from Goldsmith.

A marvelous presentation of a classic score. I echo, well done Intrada, especially for this and First Blood.
