Rhino Handmade has just announced their forthcoming expanded release of The Monkees HEAD soundtrack.



HEAD was originally released as a single vinyl LP by Colgems Records in 1968. The album consisted mainly of new Monkees songs that were recorded especially for the film, accompanied by cleverly-edited dialogue excerpts, as well as a short instrumental cue from composer Ken Thorne which played over the end credits. Rhino had previously released the soundtrack album as a single CD back in the 1990's, which included a number of bonus tracks. Rhino's new 3-CD edition will include the same bonus tracks, plus LOTS more alternate and unreleased versions of songs, as well as the contents of a promotional Davy Jones interview LP that was only issued to radio stations at the time of the film's original (and unsuccessful) release.

Also, while supplies last, early pre-orders for this set will include a 7-inch vinyl single featuring unreleased instrumental versions of 2 different Monkees songs from the film.

Rhino has just started accepting pre-orders for this set tonight, and are scheduled to begin shipping them on October 26, 2010. The set is a bit pricey at $59.95 (shipping is free for orders over $50), but I'm a big fan of The Monkees, this film, and this soundtrack, so I couldn't pass this up.
