Hello,

After the Predator and Spacecamp fiasco, I wanted to know if everyone's opinion's are still the same regarding Intrada's announcement system for limited edition soundtracks? Is it me, or is the time frame for purchasing a "popular" limited edition title getting smaller and smaller? After Inchon, in 2006, I feared the day when I would be off-line, for a few days, and I would miss out on a soundtrack, which I had craved, especially, since it seemed like there was no set schedule for these releases. A "secret" limited release could hit the market in two months or in two weeks.

After Inchon, I was glad to see Roger Feigelson write that "INCHON is the exception to the rule, not the rule itself. Nearly all other titles collector's have had plenty of time to decide what they want. We're not going to change the rules to fit the exception. I'm sure you all will have plenty of time to purchase the next release." However, my question today is, "Do we, the consumers, still have plenty of time to purchase popular limited edition releases?"

Maybe my thoughts and fears are insane, but wouldn't things be a lot easier for consumers, and to a lesser extent for Intrada, if Intrada were to announce the name of a popular limited edition release a week or so (or a little longer) before they started accepting orders. In the case of Predator and Spacecamp, would a pre-announcement really have hurt the cd sales, number-wise or time-wise?

In fact, a pre-announcement of the title, could give consumers a "fair" amount of time to purchase a particular release, and it could increase the hype for a release, since fans would now have time to create Fatso-like, "Junior, Get the Honey" threads, which could convince others to buy the score. Anyway, are pre-announcements really a bad idea?

Could you please tell me what "Fatso" means? Are you referring to the Dom Deluise film?

I dunno, I'm not sure it's better -- though not worse either -- for Intrada, considering they sell out really quick either way.

Still it's be NICE, especially with so many people weighing in on the issue and wanting SOMETHING. Lots of people praise LalaLand for announcing a week earlier.

What fiasco are you referring to? I'm not aware of any fiasco. Regarding PREDATOR, people seem to forget the facts. Varese already released 3000 copies (without any advance warning). It took months to sell out. So we decide to reissue it, albeit with some improvement. Since the Varese release the soundtrack market has been flooded with CD issues. I mean a tsunami of releases. So given there were already 3000 copies out there and a million other CDs, how can someone predict that the market for PREDATOR would have gotten bigger? Especially when CD sales across the board are down. Hindsight, as they say, is 20/20.

Rest assured, there are no plans to change how we announce titles. Given that for reasons unknown demand had grown, I believe if we had announced the title earlier it would have just sold out even quicker.

I don't actually recall much fuss, hullaballoo, brouhaha, etc over SPACECAMP. It sold out just as quickly as PREDATOR, but either everyone was worn out from the previous flame-throwing, or else we've learned our lesson (for now).

For my part, I missed out on the original INCHON and got bent out of shape about it. That is, until I took a few minutes to think about who's actually at fault when I miss out on a sale. We're all a little spoiled, and it's pretty easy to lose your manners in an impersonal forum such as this. Since then, I don't take it as a personal affront, or some kind of conspiracy, when a title sells out quickly. And, for what it's worth, I didn't really see a lot of nasty-gram's regarding SPACECAMP, either.

Then again, I don't spend a lot of time on the FSM boards for exactly this reason, so maybe it was a different story over there.

There is no fiasco. There is only demonstration that deciding how many units will sell ahead of time is a black art - and that 3,000 limits seem to be becoming an increasingly low ceiling for certain titles.

In another thread I wondered if it was possible for labels like Intrada to hedge their bets by licensing 3,000 initially but retaining an option with the licensors to purchase an extension if sales prove much better than planned. And thus take less risk. I guess not as it hasn't attracted much of a response, but coming up with ideas is more constructive than the blame game.

Cheers
