"Woad to Ruin" from Hans Zimmer's King Arthur.

Obviously, a guilty pleasure. nothing too great in terms of originality or musicality, but this track rocks and perfectly showcases both Zimmer's strengths (memorable themes, orchestral might) and his weaknesses (lack of originality, too much bombast, co-composers).

I still like it and it's currently blasting through my speakers and across the room.

"You Can't Roar" from Alan Silvestri's The Wild

Great heroic main theme and action music. Silvestri is back!

For June 10th:

"Le Destin de Marie-Loups" from Patrick Doyle's little-heard-but-so-good Nouvelle-France. This is classic Doyle, a wonderful theme (or two!), robust orchestration and a great sense of drama. I love this score and everybody who loves Doyle for scores like Much Ado about Nothing, Frankenstein or Henry V should not hesitate to pick this one up.

From Howard Shore's complete The Fellowship of the Ring, CD 3, #5: "Parth Galen".

I remember watching this extended scene back in November 2002 and hopping up and down in my chair with scoregasmic joy about the new music; it took three years until I could finally hear this track in all its glory, from the off-pitch strings of the Evil Times motif to the battle music in 5/4 kicking in. And the glorious, glorious choir taking the track to an end.

Music like this is the reason why I listen to film-music and why I will be deaf before my time.

Six stars, if possible.

"Venice Proud and Pretty" from "Dangerous Beauty". A marvelously lovely score from start to finish, one of Fenton's finest, ranking next to "Anna and the King" and "The Blue Planet"/"Deep Blue".

It has a very John Barry sound to it. I never thought I would enjoy a Powell score this much.

"When I'm Sixty-Four" from The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper.

I know it's not a soundtrack (sue me!), but since Paul is actually 64 today, it's still *the* cue for today for me. I put the soundtracks aside and been playing The Beatles' and Paul's albums today.
