It's important to note Goldsmith has gotten five great releases within half a years time.

TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE (1983)
Stellar complete release.

LONELY ARE THE BRAVE (1962)
Establishing that Varese shall be in the Universal vaults.

ONE LITTLE INDIAN (1973)
Fantastic premiere release from Disney.

IN HARM'S WAY (1965)
Sadly with the masters lost,
we must appreciate Goldsmith's art of arranging an album which,
as with TZ:TM, is an excellent presentation.
This album showcases Goldsmith's jazz prowess and dramatic sensibilities nearly equally and I've always been fond of his Hawaiian source cue.

SEBASTIAN (1968)
Deserves a mention, only because it got a questionable reissue this year.

Could we be lucky enough to see more Goldsmith this year?
Perhaps as FSM's upcoming unlimited release?

FIRST BLOOD

this might have the most imaginative use of electric keyboards after the FLINT flicks
the song is cool too as is the pop instrumental
nice job Intrada

I'm not that big a fan of STV. For me, he takes those great, upstanding, dramatic themes that achieved Day-The-Earth-Stood-Still magnitude (i.e. the main title march and Klingon Battle) and turns them into Mickey Mouse music with the way he speeds them up, decorates them with whoops and whooshes and passes back and forth between them.

Well, let me correct that. I really like STV except when he's using his Motion Picture themes. The new material I like very much.

Star Trek The Motion Picture is far and away my personal favourite Star Trek score.

But then again, I'm an oddball. I prefer The Omen to The Final Conflict (though I love them both) and I prefer things like Patton and Chinatown to things like Rambo and Air Force One.

Cheers

PAPILLON. Although I've had this score on my computer for years I've only listened to it fleetingly and I have to say it's quite a beautiful score. I have the old CD but downloaded the iTunes version since it had several bonus tracks. My interest in it was renewed by the new Blu-ray that's going to be released. I've always loved the film and can't wait to get the new disc, although I've read on High-Def Digest that the picture quality isn't so great for the first 20 minutes, but improves as the film progresses. My favourite cue has always been SURVIVAL and I love the way the second half of it was used so effectively as the END TITLE in the film. That's the one cue that I'm familiar with. It's always reminded me of PLANET OF THE APES a bit.

Cheers!
Harry

That overloads my limited cool-abbreviation range. What is CBS-EZ?

Otherwise, my "discovery" of late is THE HOMECOMING, with its rich senses of innocence, family, and rural beauty. (And writing for guitar and autoharp which I find sublime.)

Horner's RASCALS AND ROBBERS has charm and is suitable for filling out the disc, since the booklet notes inform us that sadly, all of Goldsmith's cues for the WALTONS series appear to be lost. But mostly I've just been repeating the HOMECOMING score when I listen!

My most recent Goldsmith discovery is "THE SHADOW". I was aware of the movie and that Goldsmith composed the score back in the day it came out, but I never got around to watching it or listening to any of the music. This was a very welcome release.

With the release of the Red Pony, i would have to say that would have been my discovery. I am a huge fan of the music of The Waltons and Red Pony was composed in the same time period allowing for some of the same melodies and tonal color. I also felt the need to listen to River Wild. The trumpet solo by Malcolm McNab was going through my head for weeks.

Once a year or so, MATINEE rises to the top of the Most Listened To chart here. I simply cannot stand when Goldsmith tried to do light and funny--I find Dennis the Menace, Angie and Mr. Baseball unlistenable. But with Matinee, he got it just right; I can`t imagine any other composer hitting the mark so perfectly. The music describes a very nostalgic look at youth without being syrupy or giddy. I don`t know how he did it--even the `Summer Place` copy is a splendid example of artistic give-and-take, as opposed to a rip-off. I just find this to be a touching score--those are the toughest to do well, I think.
