Hi Doug,
If you have not already read it, you might also enjoy J. Hoberman's THE DREAM LIFE - MOVIES, MEDIA AND THE MYTHOLOGY OF THE SIXTIES, published by The New Press in 2003. Composers do get mentioned in the book, including Dimitri Tiomkin's involvement in the making of John Wayne's THE ALAMO ("conceived by members [presumably these members included Tiomkin and screenwriter James Webb] of the staunchly conservative Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals [MPA]"), according to the author (Village Voice, New York Times, The London Review of Books, etc...). The book provides a fascinating back story to many of my favourite films.
