For April 4th, 2006:

"Buckbeak's Flight" from John Williams' Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

I'm not sure how it happened, but whenever Mr Williams takes a year off, he returns with the most fantastic material.

While the score's representation is mangled both in the film and on album, these two minutes' of music are almost the most scoregasmic I've heard from Williams outside of his Star Wars scores. The percussion opening is simply jaw-dropping (how old is Williams again?), and the flying theme -something Williams always has excelled at- is gorgeously simple or simply gorgeous, I can't decide.

Pity that the arrangement of this theme for Sirius' escape late in the film was left off the album.

What's your pick of the day?

Christian

Prepare for Battle / Victory For Us, TIMELINE (Jerry Goldsmith) :

An absolute masterpiece of action-adventure, how could this score be rejected will always remains a tough question ! The last music Jerry left on earth is really a ultimate consecration.

Cue of the Day, April 5th:

"L'Enfant des Loups" from the score with the same name (Serge Franklin)

This score had always been on my mind after I saw this wonderful French TV film. I hit the order button (here at Intrada, no less!) the second I saw there was a CD for it. Seriously great stuff all the way. Buy it, people!

Anyways, my pick is the end credits. It packs the score's themes together in just about three minutes of film-musical bliss. It also has one of those wonderful tiny moments of "YEAH!"; during the choral and orchestral build-up, at 0:55 there is a single outcry from the trombones (I guess), almost Goldenthalian in its ferocity. Pity that it sounds just like two trombones.

"Victorious Titus" from, well, Titus by that Goldenthal fellow.

I am in a bad mood this evening, and I just needed some loud and angry music.

"Seeing is Believing" from Silvestri's masterful The Polar Express.

Just saw the film (an awesome experience!), and half of its success is due to Silvestri's wonderful music. It's hard to pick one track out of it, but I go with this, which includes the break-your-neck versions of some calssic Christmas songs.

Now, if just somebody had the three Bs (brains, balls and bucks) to release this score in full...
