I gotta say that the best opera is truly exceptional. While it is similar, film music is not as integrated into the story as the music in opera is. But like many things, if you love opera, you love it. If it sounds fake or artificial to you, then this might not hold true.
Also, performance of the opera is critical. If you listen to a second rate, no name production, then you will not find what it is that opera lovers love about opera. Opera singers not only need to sing well but also act well and bring their character into the part.
When it works, it is sublime in a way that film music rarely equals.
