First Blood Revisited

Sometimes we get so caught up in how great Jerry Goldsmith's action or dramatic or sweeping or romantic music is, we can forget how psychologically complex it often was. Perfect example being the blend of sadness and pride and allegiance in the Burt Lancaster and Charles Durning passages of Twilight's Last Gleaming.

Anyway, I was just listening to the Main Title of First Blood in the car. No distractions - just listening and driving. In that single track that opens the movie, without the visuals, you can hear and feel a lost soul in search of something. A once proud individual looking for redemption and the reclaiming of a feeling of spirit, comraderie and rightness. A void needing to be filled and passionately wanting it. Not wanting to give in to the sadness and emptiness he's experiencing. Even remaining traces of lost innocence.

All that from a 2 minute or so piece of music. Is there any wonder Goldsmith was a genius?

The first I heard (parts of) the music to FIRST BLOOD was when a scene of that movie was shown as a clip on TV (it was a movie review show, and the scene was where RAMBO breaks out of the police office and captures a motorcycle on the street). I thought, wow, that music is darn powerful. When I then saw the movie in the theater, I was stunned by how good the score was. FIRST BLOOD ranks high, it's among Goldsmith's very finest scores.

Hey Kipling71... did you attend the screening of First Blood at the Howard Hughes Center The Bridge Cinema????? I was there too. That was awesome!!!

Goldsmith's score for First Blood is easily one of his greatest musical achievements no doubt. The man was (and is) the cinematic Mozart of our time.

By the way, trumpets do rule... I used to play the First Blood theme all the time during band in Middle School and H.S. My bandmates thought it was totally cool. Also, I never went to band camp.
