Curiosity got the better of me, yesterday, and I picked up a discounted copy of this disc [available on Six Degrees Records (San Francisco)]. I know nothing about Cinematic, other than the possibility that they are a 'border crossing' alternative band that has some familiarity with the filmmusic we love. The disc contains remixes from some of my most loved film composers (Miklos Rozsa, Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Ernest Gold, David Shire, Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini, and Nino Rota, among others) and some of my beloved scores (BEN-HUR, BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ, and HOUR OF THE GUN), but in a very contemporary vibe. Okay, so their spelling of Rozsa ('Rosa') misses the mark and their naming of Jerry Goldsmith (Jerrald K. Goldsmith) is anachronistic for the theme they have chosen to interpret (HOUR OF THE GUN as a rap song whose lyrics contemporize Goldsmith's theme) is interesting and respectful of the original theme. The stunner, for me, is Rozsa's love theme from BEN-HUR (Bombay Remix). The Bollywood setting of Rozsa, with the strings of the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, is respectful of the tenor of Rozsa's original composition. The Eastern setting, including sitar, added an appealing ambience to this melody that has been a major part of my listening life. BIRDMAN is recognizably the Elmer Bernstein composition.
If you are into boundary violating your usual musical tastes, this disc may have some appeal. Perhaps not for everyone, but I liked - some - of what I heard. The interpolations suggest intergenerational respect for the legacy of the work of the Masters. When I was paying David for the disc, I commented - "I might regret this." I did not.
