Why is it that a film such as The Red Pony has yet to ever be given a complete official CD release. There is an LP on Varese conducted by Copland with more material than his concert suite but no CD. Is my ear that old now that material such as Lethal Weapon 9 and Aliens 007 is more important than what Aaron wrote? Does Copland have his material locked up in a vault and want $250,000 for it or is there really no interest anymore in what he has accomplished. Think of the influence he had upon Herrmann, Bernstein, Goldsmith, and others. Think of how he handled Senator McCarthy during the horrible times Joe was on his communist witch hunt. You are all aware of how he did destroy Fielding more or less for so many years. As an aside all of you should see Good Night and Good Luck. In addition to one of the few times Hollywood makes an attempt to be correct there really is no music and the film works pretty well without it. The only music is another studio between scenes where some jazz is being played and sung.

I would think no one could dispute that Copland is a great composer, and wrote several superb film scores. I am especially fond of his excellent score for Wyler's The Heiress. I would love to see this score newly recorded complete with magnificent sound. In fact, all of his film music should be recorded in this manner.

I have been working on a monthly project for our public library in San Diego. The Heiress was a film that I considered as one that had three key ingredients for me. That is a good film, book, and score. I was shocked to find that there isn't a CD release of this film and Olivia won an Oscar for her performance! I am almost 100% positive it is the James book Washington Square. I am going to look into the Red Pony scenario a bit more and report back to you.
