Doug... I really liked your trip down nostalgia lane, especially your point about purchasing your LP's at the BX. I was raised on military bases growing up also and every month my parents allowed me to purchase 1 soundtrack. Officer salaries in those days didn't go too far... but my parents made the sacrifice for my hard-to-understand lust for movie music.

My greatest finds in the 1970's were easily the 2 LP editions of Star Wars, Superman, Jaws, Fiddler On the Roof (John Williams' name was on it) and the Story of Star Wars. The Base Exchanges on most Air Force bases in the 70's and early 80's usually had a good selection of LP's and 8-Tracks, although they leaned really heavily on the Rock and Funk categories.

My last BX soundtrack purchases I still remember well... at the Navy Exchange at Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Puerto Rico, the cassettes of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

Thank goodness for the internet!!!! :)

Most people have said this, but the internet really, as it were, opens up a 'new world' of what's out there. And not only stuff you can even only buy online -- most stuff can be special ordered if you know about it.

Back then -- and for me this is 1995-96 when I was in high school, and only buying classical music, mostly from the huge sections of B&N or the local chain, etc -- I spend hours flipping through the same old CDs for possibly new stuff...and the muze catalog in store. But it's kind of a waste of time compared to now, when you can sample, find out what's coming out, read a lot more reviews, find good prices, buy used, and so on and so forth. Between all the resources, there's SO MUCH music to be discovered, far beyond whatever one can find in the bin (or even pass and not give it another glance) or call up on MUZE.

The saying is "ignorance is bliss" and I truly believe that is so.

Of course, everybody is glad of the overall evolution of the things; this is about the little things that are no longer and which made it an enjoyable experience despite the difficulties.

It's a bit like library catalogues on computer and available from right across the planet; it obviously is an extraordinary, useful too you can't imagine doing away with now.
Yet, for anyone who has searched through drawers of library cards, the experience is definitely not the same, and, while I wouldn't want to undo the progress made, I find there was a certain charm to it all.

I don't think that Doug suggests that he would actually want to go back to the old days, as much as he worships the memories. I think that you couldn't suspect the president of Intrada -a company that has its own share on the stream of new releases- to be wanting to go back to those "frustrations". I sense that more likely he would like to go back to the time when there was no need to constantly develop new clues for the new releases (reminds me of the time when Inchon sold out overnight--everyone was also demanding a re-release from Intrada [including me, it's honest to add]--now there's the clue demand). While I myself too miss the clues, I feel that Intrada has stated its angle here and I'm someone who respects that.

I really liked the latest column; despite the different background, I too am a nostalgic person and I like to remind myself the pre-internet days, although, living them in a different era and a different country affects the way I lived them and remember them to a high extent. I know that if it wasn't for the internet, I would have known perhaps 20% - 50% of the scores that I do today. Would I be more or less happy ? That's hard to tell.

Wow - you all make me feel really, really old. Soundtrack LP collector since late 1960's. Dad was in SAC early life - later USAF Security Service San Antonio where I went to HS. LP's - Example: my, I was upset when the UA Hawaii LP wasn't a real "soundtrack" - then the Laser Disk was magnificent Bernstein stereo (mine still works without Laser Rot so far..), the wonderful expanded CD couldn't find the stereo elements and apparently the subsequent DVD's are mono. Sad loss of elements. That aside - I was here before CD's and "the Internets" - but enjoy all. Just don't really get into "I hate xxxxx" slams.... Hey - many of us used to try to hunt down the infamous 2 LP RCA late 1950's mono Raintree County prior it becoming available in increasingly better stereo elements on LP and then CD. I continue to be optimistic that "good things happen to those who wait.."

Spartacus anyone???
