What with the many top releases these past weeks and a very restricted budget, I had some catching up to do, which I did last night.
Chato's Land: sounds interesting
Comes a Horseman: very nice; two samples were enough, especially as 40 seconds into the second one, the motif reminded me of something; I spent several minutes playing that other bit of music over and over in my mind and looking through the scores I mp3ed onto my laptop, could not find it, but finally remembered (then checked); it reminded me of the "Big Wednesday Montage" by Basil Poledouris; no copy, but roughly similar.
Swashbuckler: spendid! the first sample was enough to knew I wanted it, but I played the second one too; brilliant, joyful, wonderful
Bone Dry: very interesting; I liked the samples a lot; some really nice things in all; I will get it, too
Conclusion: in this case, great or small (no pun), I had to check the samples (the only one I felt sure about before was Swashbuckler, and possibly Comes a Horseman).
Now, of course, the samples have to be truly representative; the labels surely do their best, but sometimes it's not that easy.
