I will say this in favor of the Superman box: not only do you have the complete Superman: The Movie score in great quality, but Thorne's adaptations do have their moments, and Courage's score for Superman IV is really fantastic--a hidden gem. There are only a couple of actual cue reuses, and the way he does them makes them feel more like a variation on a theme than a lift. However, the majority of it is original, including the arrangements on the theme, and there are three new Williams themes, two of which are very charming, and the third, while clearly derivative of the Emperor's Theme, is still a lot of fun, especially in the ways Courage uses it. It's really a terrific score, and the book is incredibly informative. I still haven't gotten to listen to the Ron Jones music or the extras disc yet, but I can honestly say it's all well worth the money. Not just endless adaptations (although there is a ridiculous amount of thing that could be worse to repeat).
Now, that out of the way, I like to give new and unfamiliar composers a chance when possible--I'm always on the lookout for great music I haven't heard before. On the other hand, as has been said, there are a number of great complete/limited releases lately, and on top of that, a good amount of score fans (myself included) have had a while to find scores from established composers that they want to have and be able to enjoy, and so the "to buy" list just keeps getting bigger and bigger. As an aspiring composer, I know I'll face the same things, but I do acknowledge and currently hold the dilemma of the consumer.
