Anybody seen this yet? A big, BIG part of me wonders what's NOT to like about Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman flouncing around in period gear but that same part of me can't imagine Eric Bana as Henry VIII. I think he's a fine actor but every time I see an ad or a trailer from the film I have to consciously remind myself who he's supposed to be. So, has anyone taken the plunge? Is it worth a look at all?
I blind-bought (deaf-bought?) Varese's score CD today because I'm a big fan of Paul Cantelon's from the Wild Colonials days (it IS the same guy, right?) and remember hearing great things about his work in "Everything is Illuminated". Well, the CD almost makes me wanna check out the film. This score is the diametric opposite of that mess that was trowelled all over "Elizabeth - the Golden Age". A multi-layered, delicately toned, at times atmospheric, at other times gently melodic vibe permeates the CD. Seems to be mostly REAL instruments with a subtle, gentle dusting of electronics enhancing the soundscape here and there. Shocker: here's a composer who seems to know what woodwinds are! I'm curious to read what Douglass Fake's verdict will be.
I wonder if anyone has noticed a slight glitch in the middle of track 6? I first heard it on my iPod and initially thought iTunes had muffed the conversion but it's on the CD as well. If it's just my disc I'll take it back and swap it but if it seems to be on all of them I'll live with it. Not a huge deal, and if I didn't like the music so much I wouldn't care, but it does niggle.
