I'm not familiar with a lot of those scores, but I know The High and the Mighty is definitely something I would pick up.

Personally, I'm gratified none of the labels used the "John Wayne Centenary" as a reason to release music to his films. I'd have held them with the same contempt as I hold for such marketing ploys as "Music from the Films of Ron Howard" or "Music from the Films of Tom Cruise" or "Robert Redford." That's fodder for the masses and not for the film music fans, IMO.

The reason to release such music is (1) for the music itself and (2) for the composers of same.

I'd much rather something be issued in honor of Tiomkin or Bernstein -- who actually had something to do with the scores -- than in honor of Wayne, whose contribution to the scores was ZERO.

Of course, if we were to get the complete "Spartacus" under the umbrella of "Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick" I'd be sickened, but I'd buy it.

"You're on the same wavelength as me. When Lukas said the Blue Box contained "one of the most famous and beloved scores of all time" I thought of THE HIGH & THE MIGHTY. Then I recalled John Wayne's centenary and wondered if there were enough unreleased and available scores to fill the eight discs of the Box. In the absense of any more likely suggestion, I'm still harbouring this hope."

On the same wavelength? Holy cow, were you standing over my shoulder when I composed the first draft of the post??? I deleted the part about The High And The Mighty being a "much-beloved" score of the fifties (everybody was whistling the theme, or so I am told...) Wow, what a coincidence. I haven't read all of the "Blue box " threads over at the FSM board (good grief....hundreds of posts), so I don't know if this "shot in the dark" theory has already been postulated by someone else. Once again, it doesn't cost anything to hope. Let's hope we're correct. :)
