It's good clean fun. Character development.... Uhhhhmmmm.... Not in this kind of film, know what I mean? I'm not sure why they didn't make this a summer movie, unless the cinematic geniuses at the studio were down on it from the start.
The fascination for me was watching the gimmick play out. Many have tried the "found footage" approach but I think this attempt works better than any other I can think of. That may not be saying much, but still....
Word to the wise: Sit as far from the screen as you possibly can. Everyone's moaning about the shaky-cam, but in context I think it makes perfect sense and the thing wouldn't be nearly as effective had all the camerawork been silky smooth. IMHO, naturally.
Needless to say, if the idea of the thing doesn't appeal to you at all - i.e. a disaster movie from the point of view of a random guy in the street with a camcorder - you're probably not gonna dig the flick either.
