Sometimes a songs soundtrack album can be very frustrating because of the lack of score, sometimes it can be a very pleasant selection of original or well known tunes, sometimes both !
Despite this, do you have some songs soundtrack albums in your collection that you can enjoy as much as a regular score album ?
I'm not talking about musicals of course...

Here are mine :

Back to the Future : oddly a disappointing CD because of the absence of the score, but as well a truly wonderful collection of songs from the movie that immediately recalls many memories of it, and skilfully mixes 50's oldies with 80's ones, marking the evolution .
Gremlins : The same as just above, but the songs are so 80's and so madly "gremlins" (Mega Madness fo ex, a great parody of She's a maniac by Michael Sembello), that it's still a pleasure to put the CD.
American Graffiti : a great collection of 50's tunes made by George Lucas. In my sense this soundtrack is a vibrant example of how pop songs can strongly support a movie, and I think it is the songs soundtrack that started this whole concept of songs soundtracks...
The Secret of my Success : a personal favorite of mine. David Foster has always been talented in bringing a pop sound to a movie and constructing a truly efficient score around this sound. St Elmo's Fire is another great example of that.
Titan AE : I think that the movie was truly lacking of a remarkable score (Graeme Revell did a standard job in my opinion) and the different pop songs became the "sound" of the movie. I certainly would have prefered a strong score (Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner composed some of the most amazing film scores for Don Bluth's movies) but the songs album manages to bring back pleasant memories from the sequences they're in however...
Freaky Friday : Kent Rolfe only has 1 track of his playful score on this album, but I find the concept of old songs becoming modern songs very efficient in that particular movie telling the story of an average 50 years old mother becoming a 16 teenager. Simple Plan has done a fabulous work in reprising the famous Turtles song Happy Together.

So what's yours ? It's up to you !

Probably South Park the movie or Anastasia... although these are hardly the examples of traditional song albums... well... let me think... eh... no idea. Guess I probably don't like any of those... :)

maybe only Breakfast on Pluto has a very good selection of songs... and there is no score in the film that would be unreleased because of the songs... so I guess this is the one :)

Intolerable Cruelty.

I do wish more Burwell was included, but the song selections are excellent, and even better: they were actually used in the movie!

Fletch: This half song / half Harold Faltermeyer soundtrack is a blast to listen to and speaks vividly to the adventures of Irwin F. Fletcher. Classic Chevy Chase movie!!!

Caddyshack: Yes, I'm a Chevy Chase fan but this movie had the craziest soundtrack of the early 1980's.

St. Elmo's Fire: John Parr title song... what else can you say? With a dash of David Foster thrown in, I loved this album!

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome: Although not technically a "song album" in my own book, Tina Turner's tunes on this Maurice Jarre venture into the outback really kicked butt. She has a way of belting out a song that really plays so well into the filmic vision of the 2 George's.

American Anthem: This album containted some of the coolest music for working out, John Parr, Andy Taylor, Stevie Nicks..... It's a shame that Alan Silvestri's score only made two cuts on side 2 (yes, I own the LP) but they really pack a punch toward the end.

A couple more....

Top Gun
Flash Gordon

Yes I am just like you guys, I hate songalbums/songs in movies but the only soundtrack I have without any score is Days of Thunder and I kinda like it, especially the Maria McKee song Show me heaven and the Hans Zimmer written song Last note of freedom is not too bad either.

btw, I did not buy this Days of Thunder soundtrack I took over it from my brothers CD collection (he died 10 years ago) and this one was the only non score soundtrack that i liked in his collection. He did however own one soundtrack with some score on it: Lethal Weapon 2 and other than these two mentioned soundtracks he only had one more soundtrack in his collection, the non score soundtrack to the Madonna film Who`s that Girl but that one I did not like.

I really enjoy very much Sofia Coppola's use of songs in Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation.

They compliment both films very well, IMHO.

Quentin Tarantino's use of classic songs and Herrmann's Twisted Nerve also worked wonders for Kill Bill - volume 1.

Just hit me yesterday --

The 1981 compilation from Herbert Ross' film of Pennies from Heaven! Clearances have probably held up any attempt to release it to disc, but what a brilliant swath of material from the Depression-era songbook, including the "Let's Misbehave" extension for Christopher Walken's tap number.
