You can buy special kits for repairing CDs. You have to sand down the varnish a little bit so that the player can read the informations underneath the scratch. It has worked just fine for me, for several CDs and DVDs.

Some used CD stores have machines that do this much more efficiently - with less chance of screwing it up, so I've been told. The places I've visited have sanded down stuff that I've bought there that got scratched but maybe if you ask very nicely and buy a few things they'd do you a favor?

The Magical Healing Power of Displex!

Today I went into town, looking for a shop that had a "cd-refurbishing" machine...without success.
One guy gave me the advice to buy a tube of Displex - display polish.
In fact the same as carpolish, only this was (according to them) more refined.
I bought one tube (5 euros), went home, polished the disc, and to my relief,
the disc didn't skip anymore. The "tschik-tschik-tschik" sound is gone too!
Now I can enjoy Howard Shore's splendid work again!

While it's unplayable, it may well still be rippable with a good reading drive.
