Just my two cents on the public's recognition of any given theme, be it BTTF or JAWS or whatever. As much as we may like Silvestri's tune, the movie has big songs that factor into the story. So the public may come away with those instead of what Silvestri did. But when you see JAWS, there are no songs that factor into the picture. So it's John Williams' theme that the public identifies with the movie. Ditto STAR WARS.

I remember when YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY came out and I assumed people would leap at the Maurice Jarre score. Nope. Everyone walked away recalling the "theme" but it turned out to be a track from an old Vangelis album!

So if a composer's competing with songs or source tracks or whatnot - he's gonna lose in the public's memory. Unless he gets to write the song as well and incorporate it into his score. Think TITANIC. That's the best of both worlds!

Well, obviously it depends on the predisposition of those viewing teh films. Most people go to armageddon and will probably remember the aerosmith tune. I remember it, but also Rabin's theme.

I guess with stuff like BTTF it was made when i was 1 years old so the pop songs dont really mean anything to me or my peers since they were never really "popular" when we were old enough to listen to them.

For my money, in our current, stupefyingly ignorant and demographically subservient society, any product not married to a slavish crusade for the puerile dollar deserves respectful attention at the very least. Good Grief! -- Bernstein, Young and Korngold rescued from the vaults, plus a comprehensive Neighbors and a lovingly re-recorded North by Northwest! Varese should be celebrated, not censured!

I bought North by Northwest, By Love Possessed, The Tall Men, and went back the next day to snatch up Gloria before it's gone for good. I also bought Alien the week before.

Also about BTTF,
I think about half people loved the Huey Lewis songs and a decent amount of "us" loved what Silvestri did, though Mr. Speilberg had his doubts about him.

At least Silvestri competed with a current pop song but then again most people relate to pop songs as most people grow up with radio & MTV.

Remember what happened with Ghost,
Everyone clamored for that classic Alex North song from Unchained and totally forgot Jarre except at Oscar time, but maybe Jarre got the Oscar Nom because of that song.

Allow me to please clamor for a release of Alex North's complete score to Unchained, if it is even half as good as the love theme!
