Funny you should mention Amazing Grace and Chuck, as I've listened to my Cd again this week-end. It's a beautiful Bernstein score. Some of these movies may not rank among his best films (Marie Ward, Da, Spies Like Us), but he sure did provide excellent scores for them.

Sad to say but Amazing Grace and Chuck displays melody, grace, and warmth the likes of which you don't get to hear at all these days. Sigh. Movie was OK. Nothing to write home about. Score is so much better.

When I first heard the old Varese album, I must admit I was underwhelmed. It seemed very derivative to me. After some time had passed, I listened to it again and now I feel bad that I ever dismissed it. I love this score. I think I understand the difference between being derivative and sounding like too many other scores by Mr. Bernstein and now the lovely, melodic voice that I cherish today. It's one of my very favorites.

This is just a fantastic album from start to finish. I loved it from the moment I got it when the CD was first issued.

I share the enthusiasm for Elmer Bernstein's AMAZING GRACE score and recently mentioned this score to James Macmillan in an Email. I have listened to it several times, in the car and on headphones, during the past month. My suspicion is that Elmer was attracted to this film, in the context of a newly emergent arms race [i.e. a new generation of nukes and early discussions of the arming of Space] during the Reagan years, due to his political predilections. I saw the film a long time ago (and have mostly forgotten it, exept that children were portrayed favorably as a future hope for humanity and Gregory Peck played a benign president), but does anyone know if the Varese CD is the complete score? The other thing I have noticed is that the score would probably benefit from a remix in terms of the volume which seems to be lower than contemporary releases.
