I've been listening to Intrada's historic new release as well as the ALIEN 20th Anniversary dvd tracks.
There is nothing of Goldsmith's score on the dvd not presented in vastly better sound on Intrada's cd. In fact, there are several errors on the dvd assembly, mostly involving the "alien world" sequence of cues.
Where Intrada presents The Terrain, The Craft, The Passage, and The Skeleton as intended, the dvd assembles for the same sequence Main Title Revised, The Passage, The Skeleton, and concludes with The Terrain. Evidently Rawling's cut-and-paste job confused even the dvd producers.
Also, the dvd mistakenly includes The Craft with the alternates.
Nothing To Say is presented on the dvd without the end tag as an alternate, but that was done editorially.
Out The Door and End Title are blended together more tightly than Goldsmith intended; it's nice to have them separated on the cd.
Please note that I'm not knocking the dvd (which is one of my favorites) but noting the depth of research that went into Intrada's new release.
When one compares the newly-remastered album tracks to Silva's cd you get several nice surprises: the first is low end! The music has real thumping power now. You also get far, far less compression: the special instruments in "Breakaway" and "Acid Test" feel more enveloped by the orchestra, less harsh. There's also, mercifully, virtually none of the album master's high-end distortion.
