OK, this may sound like out-of-nowhere crazy talk ... but I have recently been watching the DVD of the 1979 version of Dracula, and there are tons and tons and tons of cues that never made it anywhere near the LP/CD release. I'm talking about whole recurring themes and motifs that simply don't occur even once on the MCA/Varese version. This is IMHO a major, major John Williams score, and I don't think it's unprecedented for Intrada to do an expanded version of a Varese release, but then again I can't think of an example right now.
Anyhow... the sound (unlike the performance) on the first release was slightly less than stellar, and could use a new master, if the tapes are still around. Also from what I am hearing, the film score is at least somewhat of a different performance from what ended up on the album (I think it's still the London Symphony though, from the sound of it)... and there really does sound like there would be enough material there for a double CD.
Of course, I am probably smoking crack here. The rumor mill has been dead silent on any sort of Dracula re-release, even though the re-mastered and expanded DVD was release just two short years ago...
Hey, a guy's gotta have dreams, right???
Of course, I know it's bound to be something spectacular if it's going to stand out in a year that includes Monsignor and The Wind and the Lion (not to mention the fantastic, if now somewhat infamous, Inchon). I'd be thrilled with an 'official' expanded Hook, but the real triumphs here would be either Alien or The Boys from Brazil. Along with Dracula, I believe those two scores represent the final holy grails from my favorite couple of years, 1978 & 1979.
Oh wait ... seems like I also remember a ton of unreleased music from Jaws 2, last time it was on Encore, and I'm certain the music from the film and the album were different performances...
