Just received the CD this morning. Thanks, Intrada!! This is a really great listen. Don Ellis' score has to be one of the most exciting, grittiest score I've heard in a long while. Loving Jerry Fielding and Jerry Goldsmith, this one makes me feel right at home.
And Johnny Mandel's end title from The Verdict ? Well, that's a goose bumps moment. Pure and simple. His choral writing is noble and haunting, a bit of reminiscent of John Barry's quiet moments from The Lion in Winter.
Listening to Don Ellis' The Seven-Ups, I'm pleasantly surprised by the similarities between his string writing and some of Howard Shore's early scores like The Brood and Scanners. Both studied jazz extensively. So maybe there's a (French?) connection there.
Doug, Roger, and the whole Intrada team: you're the best! Really.
