Intrada presents the first of four volumes of music from the COSMOS: A SpaceTime Odyssey, with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson taking over as host in this 2014 continuation of the series Carl Sagan produced in 1980. Featuring all-new state-of-the-art CGI, animation and a wealth of cutting-edge scientific fact, the new Cosmos takes the viewer on a journey through space and time, often presenting breathtaking visuals to enhance amazing facts about the origin and wonders of how the world came to be and why.

To support this stunning voyage, Alan Silvestri was hired to compose a large-scale symphonic score to capture and unify the different stories in each episode. This wealth of music is presented across four volumes, the first of which Intrada presents today. The album, produced by the composer, includes bonus tracks not previously released, including an alternate main title. The score is rich and full of wonder, often reminiscent of previous Silvestri scores such as Contact and even parts of Judge Dredd.

I'm usually a fervent buyer of Alan Silvestri's CD. I'm really pleased to see this wonderful music existing on CD. Alan has written the most beautiful and moving music I have ever heard in a documentary series.
Alas, I'm afraid it's too expensive for me, I would have much prefered a 3 or 4 discs boxset with a special price (like Twilight Zone or Buck Rogers), because $22x4 ($88) is too much for more or less than 3 hours of music that would easily fit on 3 discs.

It's possible that the other volumes will also have previously unreleased content. Also, it's possible that they couldn't release it as a box set for reason (remember, the digital albums weren't released all at once either).

And yeah, it's disappointing that it's 4 volumes at $22 -- and it's unlikely to have anything unreleased given, supposedly, the four volumes covers everything recorded. It's certainly /possible/ that the only way Intrada could have released it on CD in the first place is in four individual volumes....but that doesn't make it less annoying (especially since, as said above, it could easily fit on three CDs).

As someone who doesn't bother dealing with downloads I'm happy that these are coming out on CD at all - even moreso with the bonus material.

Intrada could very well choose not to release future volumes if sales on this title are poor - like what happened with Twilight Zone, and La-La Land's continued DCAU CDs*. But Intrada is already committed to getting Cosmos' other three volumes out on CD so that probably won't happen. I've paid way more for long OOP CDs on the secondary market in the past, so if $88 for four volumes is what is necessary for these to come out on CD, I'll gladly take it (especially if my money's going to support Intrada so they can keep releasing soundtracks, instead of an eBay seller).

Well, it is easily argued that just about all of the best stuff from the '80s Twilight Zone series was already released. Much of the rest can be described as interchangeable synth noodling, so I'm not sure how much appeal a second volume would have. Inclusion of Drasnin's "Grace Note" score would have made the existing album almost perfect in my mind.

The Twilight Zone music also has transferring costs to factor in, as well as the cost of doing business with a larger licensor.

You're forgetting the (orchestral) scores by fan favorite composers Morton Stevens and Robert Folk. Dennis McCarthy also had other orchestral scores besides the single one Intrada included on their set, but thankfully he put those out on a composer promo at least.

Many thanks to Doug & Roger for releasing Cosmos on CD! I was a bit upset when the download-only version was available and I'm now so happy to be able to buy it on CD. And cherry on the cake, there are bonus tracks! Thanks a lot, and count me on to order the following volumes.

Silvestri got me on the very first minutes of the show. I love the way, when the C and the S from the word "Cosmos" appear during the main title, Silvestri quotes on piano few notes of his own theme from Contact. 'cause, you know, CS are also the initials of Carl Sagan, one of the greatest genius of our time, who created the original 'Cosmos' TV show but also inspired Zemeckis' superb movie in 1997... So smart and moving IMHO.

There's some beautiful set pieces feat. orchestra and choir, like Revelation of the Immensity and The Stagering Immensity of Time, which are stunning.

So again, thanks a lot the Intrada gang!

Some fun and informative comments here. Just to give folks some direction up ahead. The remaining three volumes are indeed priced a couple dollars lower. Volume 1 obviously had to do much of the heavy lifting. And yes, there are more bonus tracks coming that are not part of the digital downloads. So there's a little plus to acquiring the CDs. Our agreement for the four volumes was always tied to having separate releases with some distance between them - perhaps six to eight weeks or so. As with most things at the label end, costs and criteria established by the licensors and artists involved typically play a big role. If we could give away the music we would. But we wouldn't be around very long if we did. We're really grateful that these fabulous albums actually materialized for those of us dedicated Alan Silvestri fans and CD-oriented folk.
