I’ve been listening to my film score collection exclusively with headphones for quite some time now. One thing I’ve found is that they have significantly different sound signatures at all levels of cost, where one might greatly prefer a $400 headphone over a $2,000 headphone.
After listening to a number of headphones at varying costs, I’ve come to decide that the tried-and-true Sennheiser HD600 is my pick for film score and jazz content. It handles mids with perfect neutrality and with more articulation than any other headphone I’ve tried, including models much more expensive. Its highs are pleasantly airy, though low bass can sometimes be considered on the weak side for hip-hop and EDM music.
My headphone audio nirvana is achieved with this setup in a balanced XLR configuration:
DAC: Teac UD-301 (asynchronous bit-perfect USB connection from PC) AMP: Schiit Jotunheim Headphone: Sennheiser HD600
Headphone listeners, what is your configuration that you’ve come to love for film scores?
