Actually a little of Morricone's score was "replaced" for the English language version. In the scene when the Russian wireless operator makes contact with the beleaguered airmen, there is a tremendous build up in the score in the original Italian version as this news is relayed to the Russian authorities. In the English language version part of this music is replaced with a bouncy balalaika passage which I'm sure was not composed by Morricone! (This "missing" music does appear on the long suite "Others Who Will Follow Us" as released on a Paramount LP and re-issued on the initial Legend CD.)
