Just wanted to join in the choir of praise for this album. It's a wonderful score, with two very strong themes (which is unsurprising for Legrand), great "wide-open spaces" writing, and all of Legrand's typical hallmarks (arpeggiated counterlines, surprising orchestration, etc.) and quite a bit of the aggressive neo-Stravinskian styled music that he also explored in scores like "Never Say Never Again."
TripleC*27, if you like this music, and Legrand's approach to it, you might also really go for his "Ice Station Zebra," which he scored in a similarly balletic style - and like "Mountain Men," it's got two absolutely crackerjack themes.
(Kipling71 - don't forget that Quartet reissued "The Happy Ending" as a standalone release not too long ago - so one needn't find a Black Box to get it [Though I similarly loved everything in that collection]. I believe it's still available - and yes, it's a great score, not only with a brilliant song, but the opening "Collage" is really great, adventurous stuff.)
