CD's will never die. As stated above, Vinyl is experiencing something of second (or maybe third or fourth) life. As far as I'm concerned vinyl never died in the first place, but I digress. CD's are EVERYWHERE!!!! To suddenly disappear would through the music (and data) industries in to complete chaos. That will not happen! "I guarantee it." - George Zimmer.
In my work, the death of film has been the scuttlebutt since '98 and '99 and despite Eastman Kodak's recent Chapter 11 protection filing, 35mm motion picture film is still the preferred acquisition format for theatrical features despite the HUGE onslaught of digital cameras. Believe it or not, it's still a profitable commodity for manufacturers of the stuff!!!
Folks that say a format's demise is imminent are most likely guilty of jumping ship themselves. For those of us that like a niche market or are comfortable with a superior product (CD's & film, in my case) it will never completely go away.
My two cents... although I'm not sure my opinion is even worth that.
