Every month for the last year it seems there's another one of these doom and gloom articles, which dutifully get posted to the various boards. The compact disc is going nowhere for many years to come.

CD's will never die. As stated above, Vinyl is experiencing something of second (or maybe third or fourth) life. As far as I'm concerned vinyl never died in the first place, but I digress. CD's are EVERYWHERE!!!! To suddenly disappear would through the music (and data) industries in to complete chaos. That will not happen! "I guarantee it." - George Zimmer.

In my work, the death of film has been the scuttlebutt since '98 and '99 and despite Eastman Kodak's recent Chapter 11 protection filing, 35mm motion picture film is still the preferred acquisition format for theatrical features despite the HUGE onslaught of digital cameras. Believe it or not, it's still a profitable commodity for manufacturers of the stuff!!!

Folks that say a format's demise is imminent are most likely guilty of jumping ship themselves. For those of us that like a niche market or are comfortable with a superior product (CD's & film, in my case) it will never completely go away.

My two cents... although I'm not sure my opinion is even worth that. ;)

I wonder how profitable film really is, though. I heard a few days ago that Kodak has been unable to sell off their patents.

I've read the article - I don't share that view...

The vast majority of people still prefer to own a physical product.

I was born in '79 and grew up on CD's. In recent years I became disinterested in buying new music. I felt CD's had become boring and too loud. I then discovered my dad's record collection...it was a revelation. Not only did the music sound better...but the pride of ownership, artwork and size made a huge difference. Since then I have grown my collection a hundred fold...buying CD's is now a last resort. Having said that, CD's are still preferable over downloads.

I genuinely think the music industry needs to rethink its strategy. Music and digital media have become too convenient and too versatile. Where is the fun in owning a download? Skipping through parts of a track whilst sitting by your self? Where has the social aspect of enjoying music gone? This is exactly the reason I converted to records. Im not going to preach to you...but alot can be said for sticking on a record and showing your friends.

I don't think Intrada needs to worry about CD's vanishing overnight. However, if I was Intrada I would seriously consider releasing a few of their best selling titles on vinyl. There is a large market out there desperate for new, quality releases.

Thats just my 2 cents...

Jago

Nice thoughts. However, I don't suspect there's a really large market for vinyl, at least not with soundtracks. Look at the size of the CD market for scores, for instance.
