I love that these are coming, but how much does anyone wanna bet that whatever Doug does will be deemed an utterly BOTCHED FIASCO by someone who has commented on here, not to mention the gross LACK OF RESPECT FOR THE CUSTOMERS (who pay his salary) he will have shown by not following each and every instruction presented here to the letter? ;)

Best of luck, Doug. Looking forward to both Intrada "Conan" sets. :D

Fantastic feedback fellow music lovers, Conan fans, soundtrack fans... whatever. I appreciate it a lot! Of course, just as Roger suggested to me a couple of nights ago, I'll no doubt be right back where I started. People will want it both ways. And he's right. Us humans are a crazy breed, aren't we?

Some points to keep in mind:

1) We NEVER simply place "2-second" spreads between tracks. NEVER. Did I say NEVER? I'll say it again. NEVER! When we master our albums, we always pay attention to the tempos, moods and pacing of the outgoing tracks as well as the incoming ones. Some massive action cues or long sobering sequences may need several seconds of pause before plunging into the next track. Other times, a long sobering sequence might instead be best followed by little pause and a sudden, immediate "wake up" call. Love themes may need a moment to savor the last lingering chords, short cues may work best with very brief one-second pauses... there is NO "one size fits all" approach here at Intrada. We make music. Other labels may do "global" pauses but we just can't. It's not musical. We started paying attention to pauses or "spreads" back with our first LP 25 years ago... interestingly (or coincidentally) with Poledouris. (Horner loves long pauses so one can absorb what they just heard, Phillips loves quick pauses so things'll keep moving right along.) Anyway, from the beginning we conducted beats during pauses, made tempo indications, tapped our feet, you name it to determine the gaps between tracks... and we still do so to this day. Always have, always will.

2) We won't be including Mako's narration... even as an "extra". He's on the movie. We're doing the music. Besides, to be honest, if I included favorite lines of dialog (besides owing a fortune to Universal) I'd have a 129-minute project. I'm a fan of the entire script.

3) My leaning is to present the three cues in question as three separate cues in the main program. I'm tempted to assemble them into one sequence as an extra on CD 2 so we have it both ways... if it's financially feasible. But separate tracks will probably trump crossfading them together, otherwise. Probably. Not yet positive.

I know some people would love lots of extras. We'll do what we can but offering the cues both assembled as in the movie and separated as on the LP, plus alternates, changes made during the sessions, versions with and without chorus and so forth just isn't possible. Remember, this is a long score and requires a second CD even without any extras. And... big surprise, though they may seem like mere bonuses, we actually pay for them. I'd like to keep this set affordable for people.

We're working as quickly as we can on this. Just remember that we're working on a lot of projects simultaneously so our plates are really full. I know I've said this before, but we wouldn't have it any other way around here. We love this stuff.

Doug,

The only "extra" I really care about is the Anvil of Crom with the horns up an octave. I guess you would know if that's album worthy, since you've heard it, but it certainly sounds interesting to me! :)

That all makes sense. I didn't know that there's enough regular score music to go beyond one disc.

I normally don't like dialogue on score albums, but narration in the Prologue enhances the mood for me. Offhand, the only other time when dialogue mesmerizes me when listening to a score album is the end portion of the long track for the "Kick the Can" segment in FSM's Twilight Zone release.

After six pages of back and forth responses - separate, not separate - I guess the only solution is a twelve CD collection with all the multitrack elements on individual tracks so everyone can edit and mix the score the way they'd like it. For my choice, because it's a score written for a film, I'd like to hear it assembled as intended for the film. I'm not opposed to long tracks either. I may not like everything about a certain cue, but I can listen to 4 minutes or more of something less interesting to get to the part I like. There are many film scores that have too many short cues for my taste and I often wish they'd edit a few together for a longer listening experience ( and many scores that do that without a listener even being aware). In the end, it all comes down to the music itself and for this release - thanks for the effort and expense!

Too bad for Mako, it was a great way to introduce the Main Title.
As for extras, If possible, I'd like to get the instrumental versions of the kitchen or riders of doom (THAT would be awesome!)

I don't understand why they are called 'instrumental' instead of calling what they REALLY are - 'karaoke'.

I also dunno why people like them so much as they are incomplete...

My vote would be as heard in the film. If they were separate I'd have to edit them together to hear it how it is in the film, which is certainly an option, but I would never listen to them separate, only ever together.

I'm only in favor of having the tracks separate if how they were used in the film is not how the composer intended (see pretty much the entirety of Phantom Menace's score), but composers frequently recorded the cues in sections so that they can then be edited together later in post, because it's just easier to record in bits and pieces than a long 10 minute track that a violinist screws up on at the nine minute mark. I don't expect every cue to appear separate as recorded, though. I would like it to be composited as intended to be heard in the film by the composer.

I guess one of the big questions will be in regard to its limited pressing. Hopefully enough will be produced to go around. I know it's expensive, but I just don't want people to miss out on it.
