Heaven and Earth is quite possibly my favorite score to an Oliver Stone film. The opening and closing tracks are fantastic. I think some of the credit should also go to Randy Miller for orchestrating and conducting the score.

It seems Kitaro and Randy Miller also worked together on the score to The Soong Sisters, which I just ordered today.

I would like to throw another recommendation onto the anime fire here if I may:

This score to Super Atragon by Masamichi Amano is simply amazing. It's a fully orchestrated rousing action adventure score with some beautifully composed quieter moments.

You will not believe that this score is to a Japanese anime. If you liked Hisaishi's Mononoke, or Spirited Away, I cannot imagine you not enjoying this wonderful soundtrack.

It's also well worth the $12.95 price tag.

End of sales pitch. :)

I was kind of wondering how long it would be before someone brought up Masamichi Amano…

Super Atragon is definitely a very impressive score. Not quite my favorite by him, but it's up there. You can hear some clips of it here:

http://www.samgoody.com/Music/Album.asp ... VFCSA001.2

I'd also reccomend checking out his scores to Giant Robo: The Animation. Unfortunately, only two of the seven soundtracks for the show ever got released in the U.S. and a couple of them are even out of print in Japan. A shame, since from what I've heard, there's some really great stuff on the those discs. I especially like the third soundtrack.

Some Clips from the first two cds:

Giant Robo I:

Giant Robo II:

And if you decide to buy them, I think this is probably the best place to pick them up:

Giant Robo I:

Giant Robo II:

Wow. I hope all those links actually work.

I agree about Giant Robo Squiddy, what a wonderful series of scores. The reason I didn't mention them is that I didn't want to overwhelm everyone with a lot of new titles. I believe that Super Atragon is a wonderful introduction to this style of music as I do find Robo's music a little cartoony. Not like other electronic anime scores mind you, but a bit over the top at times. Plus, there is like six different volumes to buy to Atragon's one with a few long out of print as you mentioned.

I still adore them though, so please don't misunderstand me. Giant Robo rules. :)

Thanks for putting up the links for the samples, I couldn't find any on-line.

Yeah, Super Atragon was the first Amano score I bought, and it definitely made me want to get a few more. The main reason I mentioned Giant Robo is because I noticed RightStuf is currently selling the first two soundtracks for $3.99 each, which is pretty nice deal!
