I'd say my mother was instrumental in much of my early music listening as she provded lots of LPs and cassettes. She personally liked showtunes of all sorts, specifically anything that Julie Andrews performed on and Rodgers & Hammerstein's three greatest: THE KING AND I, CAROUSEL & OKLAHOMA.

My father was an easy listening junkie... he really loved listless music which didn't inspire anything but sleep. He did however know of Mancini and he bought me a collection cassette album that we both listened to in the car once in a while.

Neither of my parents used to listen to soundtracks, but since I've become a big fan, they've started to, at least a little bit. My father really enjoys scores to historical films, especially if he's seen the movie... "Saving Private Ryan", "Glory", "Schindler's List", "Braveheart", that sort of thing. He'll hear something he likes, and ask me to make him a compilation cd of "music that sounds like that." My mother doesn't really care for music a whole lot, but she plays John William's score to "Sabrina" endlessly, ever since I gave it to her as a gift one year. Seriously, she won't listen to anything that's remotely suspenseful, action-filled, dark... she referred to Richard Robbin's "Remains of the Day" as sounding "like horror movie music", and called John Barry's "Dances with Wolves", "much too dark to listen to." Ah, my dear mom...

Back at ya later

The only movie scores my parents/Dad listened to were the ones I brought home.
My Mom didn't care and my Dad got into it alittle.
I'm not sure where my love of movie scores came from, I loved it then and I love it now.

I was blessed that my parents actually like film music.

When my mom was in her teens she even bought the old 78 rpm of Newman's Captain from Castille. She's also a trained soprano and classical musician so she recognizes good music. When I was 8 or 9 she used Carlos' Switch-On Bach to explain to me what polyphony was. When she saw that I was acquiring a taste for film music, she started telling me about Alfred Newman, and I laughed -- "Alfred Newman? He's the Mad Magazine kid!"

Both parents love classic John Williams -- Superman, Raiders, Star Wars, ET. In fact my my mom owned American Journeys before I did! She also owns The Patriot (which I admit I've still yet to acquire)! My dad loves Hoosiers and Night Crossing.

My mom thinks John Corigliano is great (especially Red Violin) and "respects" more avant garde music (she even likes some Takemitsu), but my dad will have none of it.

My dad liked the theme from Chinatown, and one time asked me to put the score on in the car during a trip. Unfortunately by the time it reached "The Captive" he was like "This is AWFUL!" and turned it off. Another time I had Planet of the Apes on my boombox and he actually reached over and swtiched it off, having had enough of "that noise" (i.e. the lush string finale of "The Search" -- tho I think it was the mixing bowls which really influenced his decision!).

My mom hates Phillip Glass. But that's ok...so do I!
