INTRADA Announces:
UNCLE JOE SHANNON
Composed and Conducted by BILL CONTI
INTRADA Special Collection Volume 96
The 1978 United Artists film Uncle Joe Shannon features Burt Young as Joe, a successful studio musician whose is shattered when a fire claims the lives of his wife and son. A year later, Joe is reeling about in a drunken haze, and embarrassing his musician friends by crashing club gigs with his crazed playing. But the suicidal Joe finds new reason to live when an ex skips town, leaving her son Robbie (Doug McKeon) in his flophouse care. At first rescuing the boy from an orphanage, and then saving his life at a cruel cost, Joe ultimately finds a new son on his path to the straight and narrow—a journey expressed through his trumpet playing.
Hot off the success of his score for Rocky, composer Bill Conti was engaged to provide that gritty Rocky feel as Joe battles adversity, especially coming through in the jazzy orchestral sound of composer Bill Conti. And yet Conti also provides a similarly heartfelt, yet far darker vibe for Uncle Joe Shannon. Legendary jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson is the “voice” of Joe Shannon. Ferguson showed his trumpet range in Elmer Bernstein’s orchestrally epic score for The Ten Commandments and Leith Stevens’ rebellious jazz sound for The Wild One earlier in his career. His playing here becomes the heart and soul of Joe.
For this world premiere CD release of Uncle Joe Shannon, Intrada was given access to the original ¼” 15 i.p.s. two-track album master to present the original LP presentation. The elements were in perfect condition and the results are clean and vibrant.
This release is limited to 1000 copies.
