INTRADA Announces:

BONE DRY
Composed by SCOTT GLASGOW
INTRADA MAF 7103

Brett A. Hart's Bone Dry is a two-character thriller set against a blistering and desolate desert landscape. Eddie (Luke Gross) finds himself being forced at gunpoint by an unseen assailant on a dark and brutal journey through the harsh terrain of the Mojave. His nemesis is Jimmy (Lance Henriksen), a man with an aberrant agenda. Armed with a rifle, scope, walkie-talkies and a truck, Jimmy has organized a series of ambushes and mantraps designed to push Eddie to the limits of his humanity. Bone Dry is inspired by the Spielberg classic Duel, Cooper and Shoedesack's The Most Dangerous Game, and even the works of Rod Sterling.

"When finally choosing my debut film, I picked a thriller that would accommodate an approach similar to Hitchcock and Herrmann vehicles. It is a picture of, to use Hitchcock's phrase, 'pure cinema': set pieces woven together with tremendous moments of music and suspenseful imagery; storytelling without a great deal of dialog; in other words, a visual opus," says Hart.

When composer Scott Glasgow accepted the assignment to score Bone Dry, he was immediately struck by the opportunity to do something unique. For the primary color of the score, he chose to record and process the sounds of a plucked cactus. As Glasgow comments in his notes, "In this score, you will find a very plucky, delayed arpeggio sort of sound representing the desert, but you will also hear many scrapes, brushes, thunks, and other cactus manipulations throughout. I even created a whole keyboard sample 'tuned' and mapped so I could play it like a piano." A highlight of the score is the final 15 minutes performed by the FILMharmonic Orchestra of Prague consisting of 50 strings. "Epiphany," "Contrition," and "Redemption" form a three-movement symphony of sorts, bringing the score to a powerful, dramatic close. This new release features over 70 minutes of Scott Glasgow's score.

How strange, I just watched this movie tonight.

I might just have to pick this one up. The music was very understated in many scenes, not unlike the score to The Hitcher. But then I recall some broader strokes during the actions bits. Think I'll plop in the disc again and just check out the music alone in some key scenes.

I recall really liking the score.

Had no idea about this one, but you wrote up a really strong description Roger, so into the netflix queue goes the flick, and hopefully into the shopping cart goes the album. It would be nice to 'discover' a new composer with a fresh voice and something unique to say.

Post subject: QUESTION for Soundtrack Collectors: New or Old??
PostPosted: Fri Mar 07, 2008 4:51 am
How many of you out there listen to (or buy) NEW scores by new composers?

Like the CD Intrada is putting out at the end of the month for my score to BONE DRY. It seems like there is a huge interest in that Superman Box set (which I believe are arrangements of John's music, not new written scores at all).. What about new music? new composers? Do you only spend money on older scores already released or maybe new to CD by established composers or do you occasionally go for a new score by a new guy from hear clips online? Or do you need to see the movie to be interested in buying the score??

Personally, I totally get into all new releases by new composers,, just to hear something fresh and new,, however established guys are great fun too. I recently picked up Horner's Spiderwick Chronicles and besides the fact that he "borrows" from Benjamin Britten's Midsummer Nights Dream, it's a fantastically fun score!

I'm just curious how many people on this message board are interested in new scores / new composers versus older scores / re-issues / older composers..

~ Scott

I'd say I was about 50/50. It really depends on the release. Recently, I feel in love with Ilan Eshkeri's score for Stardust. And I'm always on the lookout for new material by Frederic Talgorn and Patrick Doyle.

As for older releases, I pick-up any score that I loved that I have never owned. Pretty straight forward.
