For me it was discovering North By Northwest when I was 9 or 10 years on French T.V. Those were the days when "old" films could still be shown on national television. A Little bit later came The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Mysterious Island, two films often shown on T.V. around the Christmas Holidays.

On my thirteenth birthday my mother offered me a vinyl reissue by Decca/London of the 4 Herrmann rerecordings, in one boxed-set with nice liner notes. Around the same time I must have watched Obsession on television and absolutely fell in love with the score. At that time I was very impressed by Herrmann's lyrical, strong, in your face emotional writing. I'm still in love with that particular score...

And so, I've been a devoted fan ever since.

And may I also seize this opportunity to say how extraordinary these two new rerecordings are. I received them this afternoon and just listening to the complete Fahrenheit 451 is an absolute revelation. I've actually listened to some cues with a lump in my throat: it's that good!! This one had always been one of my dream releases and now thanks to Anna, John and Maestro Bill it's a reality. Congratulations! You can really feel how these two recordings are real labors of love. Fantastic booklet, too.

Back in the early 90s, magician David Copperfield had a TV special at least once a year. He would take the liberty of using film music during his magic acts, and even went so far as to mention the composer's name. Especially interesting was that he never mentioned the film for which the music was composed.

I vividly remember him demonstrating the illusion of levitation to the music of Bernard Herrmann. I recall Copperfield actually saying "...and a little Bernard Herrmann for your listening pleasure," or something like that. The specific cue was taken from "Psycho," which Copperfield failed to mention. But just the fact that he named Herrmann was cool as hell!

At the time, I didn't know that it was "Psycho." At that point, I had only read about Herrmann but never heard his stuff. But just hearing that snippet on the Copperfield show sparked my interest in Herrmann. A couple years later was when I heard "Psycho" on CD and immediately remembered the cue as heard on the show, "The City."

"The City" shows how Herrmann loved to write these conversational-like pieces... He has the orchestra state a phrase and another part of the band will answer back with a variation. Then again and again and again. Hypnotic but not really too repetative.

Then one summer I decided to splurge and I bought like 12 Herrmann CDs all at once. I particularly enjoy Intrada's "Jason and the Argonauts."

My entrance into Bernard Herrmann´s music was of course Hitchcock´s North by Northwest and Psycho. In fact my first Herrmann LP I purchased in 1981 was North by Northwest conducted by Laurie Johnson. I still remember when I listened to the music for the first time I was disappointed from its sound but I liked the music very much.

When I discovered a few days later the LP for The 7th Voyage of Sinbad it was the first time I realized that Bernard Herrmann was the composer. It became one of my most played records and Bernard Herrmann one of my top favorite composers.
