After watching Kubrick's The Shining for the first time last night, I was precisely thinking of writing something on the music.

As most of you surely know (I certianly was the only one not having seen teh movie yet), it was a mix of Bartok and I don't remember who and Wendy Carlos-- I must add I thought the first bars were very reminiscent of Rimsky-Korsakov's Russian Easter piece (I need to check the actual English title).

I wonder what you think of it; I really disliked that "score" a whole lot. It was constantly intense, always edge-of-the-seat, which made it uncomfortable but not in the desired way; there were also two moments where the music climaxed as if something portentous, horrible, surprising, scary or whatever occurred, when there really was nothing.

In other words, it sounded like a poor patchwork job, with repeating bits of constantly tense and climactic music, which undermined it all.

It was still a great movie; Nicholson was extraordinary, adding an apparent infinity of nuances and shifts in mood to the slightest sentence; Duvall was an equally great cast, as the fragile, doesn't-stand-the-slightest-chance wife. I kept wishing Kubrick had let a composer score the movie correctly-- whether Goldsmith, Bernstein, Jarre, Schifrin, ...

Tonight, I watched Dagon,, which was a pretty good film indeed. Music-wise, I didn't notice much that would make we wish for a CD release, but it does not mean it was particularly bad. The cue during the flashback was interesting, and I liked the rather dreamy end music.

I was chatting with Harry Manfredini not too long ago and he lamented that he was surprised that he rarely, if ever, gets calls for any current crop of theatrically released horror films. (He wasn't even approached for Freddy VS Jason.) It's very disheartening to see the craft of scoring good scares being treated with so little respect (Though, I do secretly enjoy todays horror scores, if only for their non-intrusive like ambiance that easily fills the quite moments of a work day.) As a narrative, the shower music of PSYCHO never fails as a good substitute for a good shot of adrenaline. It would be great to hear that certain kind of music again. The kind that has a resilient and decadent way of making the hair stand up upon ones neck.

Until then, I've got plenty of droning ambient stuff to keep my mind "un-occupied."

Dario Marianelli's THE RETURN is IMHO a good example of fine recent horror score. Creepy in some places, yet melodic material is still included as well. Only problem for me is that the cues are mainly too short to develop.

Or just anything Marco Beltrami does in horror genre is very close to my ears - Scream trilogy, Cursed are imho great scores and there is thematic MIMIC as well although it's already 10 years old or Underworld II/Blade II even though those are IMO mainly action scores.

I received Wrong Turn 2: Dead End this morning (I had liked the samples) along with Bad Boys.

It's not bad at all as DeviantMan said, but I perfectly get what you mean, Doug.

I love the very Morriconeish banjo theme that appears throughout, and it would have been a truly great score if that theme had been used more (with variations, of course). Some aspects are somewhat reminiscent of [bi]Battlestar Galactica[/i], especially an oriental-flavored motif.
The score does not rely on these thematic aspects, though, and plays up the powerful electronica a lot more, and that's the pity of it.

It definitely needs more playing, and I wish the aspects I mentionned had been developed, as I love them, but I'm not writing the whole thing off, though I understand your points and agree-- let's say it's roughly 50/50.

I think a little honesty is what we need here right now folks. Let's face it, the melodies are just simply as thin and anemic as these film's storylines.

Perhaps if filmmakers start coming up with storylines that they themselves actually care about, the studios will actually start to care if the rest of the elements that make up a good movie-music for one-are up to the quality of the story itself.

I have a suggestion as to how current Hollywood horror film scores could be improved: try making original films for a change!!!!! Maybe something new for a change would spurn some creative, original musical thought. Enough remakes already!!!!! John Carpenter's films are not that old so why the hell are they all being remade?

I agree with the stated comments that good horror film scores died off at the conclusion of the 80's... with one exception: Howard Shore's score for Silence Of The Lambs was pretty damn spooky! That music still gives me the creeps.
